Week of December 8, 2014
11th Academic English
This week we will continue our study of The Crucible.  On Monday we will discuss Act II and read together selections from this act.  On Tuesday you will take a quiz on Act II and will work on your reading response due on Thursday.  On Wednesday you will take a test on Acts I and II, then will begin work on the Act III study guide.  Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #7, will work on vocabulary list #8 and will turn in reading response #7.  On Friday you will continue work on your Act III study guide.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue our study of Shakespeare's MacBeth.  On Monday you will take a quiz on Act III.  On Tuesday you will take the first unit test on MacBeth, then will work on your reading response due on Thursday.  Wednesday and Friday we will read together and discuss Act IV of this play.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #7, will work on vocabulary list #8 and will turn in reading response #7.

11th Academic English
This week we will continue our study of The Crucible.  On Tuesday and through most of the week, we will read together and discuss selections from Act I.  We will have a quiz on Act I near the end of the week.  You will also begin work on the Act II Study Guide for this play.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue or study of MacBeth.  We will read together and discuss Act III of this Shakespearean classic.  On Friday you will take the Act III quiz and will begin work on Act IV.  On Monday of next week you will take a test on the introductory information on The English Renaissance and on the first three acts of this play.

This week we will continue our study of Arthur Miller's The Crucible.  We will discuss life in Salem in 1692.  You will continue to read Act I and complete the Act I study guide.  Have a great Thanksgiving holiday break and be sure to come back to school well-rested and stuffed!!

This week we will continue our study of Shakespeare's MacBeth.  On Monday you will take the Act II quiz  and continue work with Act III.  You will continue to read Act III and complete the study guide for this portion of the play.  Have a great Thanksgiving holiday break and be sure to come back to school well-rested and stuffed!!

On Monday you will take a test on Early Colonial America. On Tuesday we will begin our study of Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible.  We'll take notes while viewing a documentary on the Salem Witch Trials, then will begin work with the play itself.  On Thursday you will take Vocabulary Quiz #6, will turn in Reading Response #6 and will begin work on Vocabulary List #7.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue our study of Shakespeare's MacBeth.  On Monday you will take a quiz on Act I, then will work on the study guide for Act II.  Later in the week we will read together and discuss scenes from Act II.  On Thursday you will take Vocabulary Quiz #6, will turn in Reading Response #6 and will begin work on Vocabulary List #7.  Next Monday you will take a quiz on Act II of MacBeth.

This week we will look at explorers' narratives of life in early America.  You will work together in groups, "chunking" the information from your assigned section, then will present that information to the entire class later in the week.  Remember to prepare for a test on early American literature being given on Monday.

This week we will work on Act I of MacBeth.  You will read Act I and complete the Act I study guide independently.  Together, we will read selected scenes from Act I.  Remember to prepare for the Act I quiz that will be given on Monday.

This week we will continue our look at very early American literature.  We will begin reading explorers' and settlers' personal narratives about the new world.  You'll also continue work on your Origin Myth writing which is due on Friday.  On Thursday, you will take vocabulary quiz #5, will turn in reading response #5, and will begin work with vocabulary list #6

12th Academic English
This week we will begin our study of England and British literature during Queen Elizabeth's reign.  On Monday, you will take notes during a power point presentation on "The English Renaissance."  Tuesday and through the rest of the week we will study culture's influence on the literature of the period as seen through Shakespeare's The Tragedy of MacBeth.  You will begin work on Act I of this classic.  On Thursday, you will take vocabulary quiz #5, will turn in reading response #5, and will begin work with vocabulary list #6.

11th Academic English
This week we will begin our study of early American literature.  You will outline some introductory notes from pages 1-12 in the literature anthology, then will take notes during a power point lecture on this information.  We'll read together and discuss Native American origin myths and, near the end of the week, you will begin to create your own origin myth in the style of the Native Americans.

12th Academic English
This week we will wrap up our study of The Canterbury Tales.  We will finish discussion on "The Nun's Priest's Tale" and will read together and discuss "The Pardoner's Tale."  You will take a unit test on The Canterbury Tales sometime this week.  When you finish the test, you will read and outline pp. 220-231 in your literature anthology, "The English Renaissance."  You will also take notes during a power point discussion/lecture of this information.

This week we will continue our work with The Canterbury Tales.  On Monday and Tuesday you will work on "The Prologue."  On Wednesday and Thursday we will read together and discuss "The Nun's Priest Tale" and "The Pardoner's Tale."  On Friday, you will take vocabulary quiz #4, will turn in reading response #4, and will work on vocabulary list #5.

Enjoy your holiday on Monday!  On Tuesday we will begin reviewing editing and revising skills not only to improve your communications but also to prepare you for future writing exams.  On Friday you will take a test on editing and revising.

Enjoy your holiday on Monday!  On Tuesday you will take a test on both Beowulf and Arthurian literature.  After the test we will discuss a writing assignment based on the film Becket.  This film and the writing assignment will prepare you for our study of The Canterbury Tales and Medieval English life, so make sure you are taking good notes during the film.

This week we will wrap up our study of sentence classification.  Monday and Tuesday we will review your worksheet answers and will prepare for a test on this information.  The sentence classification test will be given on Wednesday.  On Thursday of this week you will take vocabulary quiz #3, will turn in reading response #3 and will work on vocabulary list #4.  Friday we will begin practicing editing and revising skills.

12th Academic English
This week we will finish our look at Arthurian literature.  On Monday and Tuesday we will discuss both "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" and the selection from "Morte d'Arthur."  We will discuss the content of the selections and how these selections fit the definitions of both medieval romance and legend.  On Wednesday you will take a test on both Arthurian literature and Beowulf.  On Thursday of this week you will take vocabulary quiz #3, will turn in reading response #3 and will work on vocabulary list #4.

We will continue our study of Sentence Classification using worksheets distributed to you in class.  We will review your answers to each sentence on the worksheets by posting answers on the board.  Near the end of the week we will prepare for a test on Sentence Classification.  Have fun with Homecoming Spirit Week 2014!!

12th Academic English
On Monday you will turn in your completed Beowulf Modern Writing Assignment.  We will continue to prepare for a study of Arthurian Literature by viewing and taking notes on two documentaries, "In Search of Camelot" and "King Arthur."  When we finish the documentaries, we will begin reading "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," pp. 162-175 in the literature anthology.  Later in the week we'll begin work with a selection from "Morte d'Arthur," pp176-184 in the literature anthology.  Enjoy your final Homecoming Spirit Week as a North Schuylkill Student!!

On Monday you will take a test on sentence analysis, then will work on your Reading Response due on Thursday.  Tuesday we'll begin work with clauses and with sentence classification.  On Thursday you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #2, will turn in Reading Response #2 and will begin work on Vocabulary List #3.  On Friday we will continue work with clauses.

12th Academic English
On Monday we will review Vocabulary List #1 in preparation for your quiz on Thursday.  You will also have time to work on the reading response that is due on Thursday.  Tuesday and Wednesday you will be given class time to work on the Beowulf Modern Writing Project, which will be due on Monday, September 29th.  On Thursday you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #2, will turn in Reading Response #2, and will begin work on Vocabulary List #3.  On Friday we'll view two documentaries on Arthurian Legend in preparation for our literary studies next week.

This week we'll continue our review of the Parts of the Sentence.  Using worksheets, we'll practice sentence analysis skills.  On Friday you'll take a test demonstrating your mastery of sentence analysis.

12th Academic English
This week we'll continue our look at the epic poem, Beowulf.  We'll discuss what we read, focusing on what we can learn about the Anglo-Saxons through their literature.  We'll also discuss the concepts of Fate and Free Will, and will focus on the characteristics that make Beowulf a hero.  On Friday you'll take a test on Beowulf and will begin a project based on this epic poem.

This week we'll continue our grammar review.  Monday and Tuesday we'll check the two worksheets you completed, identifying Parts of Speech.  Wednesday and Friday we'll work with the Parts of the Sentence and practice sentence analysis techniques.  On Thursday you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #1, turn in Reading Response #1, and begin work with Vocabulary List #2.

12th Academic English
This week we'll continue or study of early British literature.  On Monday you'll work on the Exile writing prompt.  Tuesday you'll take a test on the introductory notes on early British literature and on the Anglo-Saxon poetry we studied in class.  After the test, and on Wednesday and Friday, we'll work with the epic poem Beowulf.  On Thursday you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #1, turn in Reading Response #1, and begin work with Vocabulary List #2.

This week we'll finish our study of Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men.  On Tuesday you'll take a quiz on on the last study guide, then Wednesday you'll take a test on the entire novel.  We'll watch a film version of this story, then discuss the similarities and differences between the film and the novel you read.  Later in the week we'll begin reviewing for your final exam.

12th Academic English
This is it, guys and girls---your final week of classes in high school!!!  Monday and Tuesday we'll review for the final.  Check your calendars for the final exam schedule for seniors.  Make sure you prepare well for the final!!!  Have your literature anthology ready to hand in on the day you are scheduled to take the final exam.  Great job, folks!  You all should be proud of your hard work and dedication!  Enjoy the next couple of weeks!

This week our studies will focus on the classic American novel, Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck.  You'll receive two study guides to help with your comprehension of the novel.  On Wednesday you'll take a quiz on the first study guide and, early next week, you'll be given a quiz on the second study guide.  Later this week, on Friday, you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #17 -- the last vocabulary quiz in this class for this school year.

12th Academic English
This is it, guys and girls--the last full week of regular classes in your high school career!!!!  We'll wrap up our look at the British Modern/Postmodern Period.  On Wednesday you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #17.  On Thursday you'll take a test on the Modern/Postmodern Period, then begin preparing for your Final Exam.  Make sure you keep up with the work remaining in this course and make sure you prepare to ace the final!!  Make the last weeks of your senior year the best weeks!!!

This week you'll finish up work on the Jazz Age Stories project.  Don't forget that you'll need your completed project at the start of class on Tuesday, May 6th.  No late projects will be accepted.  After you turn in your project we'll go over Vocabulary List #16.  On Wednesday, you'll work on Reading Response #14 which will be due on Friday, May 9th.  On Thursday you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #16 and will work on Vocabulary List #17.  Be sure to keep up with all work as we begin to wrap up your junior year in high school!!

This week we'll continue our study of England's Modern/Postmodern Period.  On Monday we'll read together and discuss "The Lady In The Looking Glass; A Reflection,"  pp. 1156-1163.  On Tuesday we'll review Vocabulary List #16 then work with "The First Year of My Life," pp. 1164-1170.  Don't forget that your Character Analysis Project is due at the start of class on Wednesday!!!  On Thursday you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #16 and will work on List #17.  On Friday we'll begin work with "The Rocking Horse Winner," pp. 1174-1189.  Make sure you keep up with all work as your final year of high school is quickly coming to an end!!  Final exams are just around the corner!!

This week you will continue work on the Jazz Age Stories project.   Make sure you are completing a very detailed plot summary graphic organizer for each of the stories you are reading.  By the end of the week you should be working on your written response to the essay question you've chosen to answer.  Be sure to speak with me if you have any questions or run into any problems.

12th Academic English
This week we'll begin our look at literature from the Modern/Postmodern Period.  On Monday you'll take notes during a power point discussion of the Modern/Postmodern Period.  Tuesday we'll read and discuss "The Demon Lover," pp. 1030-1038.  Thursday we'll look at "The Fiddle," pp. 1076-1084.  Don't forget that your Character Analysis Project will be due next week, on Wednesday, May 7th.  We're coming down to the wire, so make sure you are keeping up with all the work that is due before you graduate!!

This week we'll continue our study of the American Modern/Postmodern Period in literature.  We'll read together and discuss Thurber's "The Night The Ghost Got In," then work on taking notes from the section "Prosperity and Protest" pp.956-965 in your literature text.  We'll then read "The Brown Chest" by John Updike and will prepare for a test on the Modern/Postmodern period early next week

This week we'll begin a survey of the Victorian Period in British literature.  We'll outline introductory information, then read the poetry of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, pp. 834-844 in the literature anthology.  On Thursday you'll begin work on your Character Analysis project, due the first week in May.

This week we'll continue our look at Romantic Age literature.  We will finish reading and discussing the selections from last week and will begin work on "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," pp. 686-709.  Be prepared for a test on the Romantic Age sometime next week.

This week we'll continue our look at the literature from the British Romantic Period.  We'll discuss Mary Shelley's "Introduction to Frankenstein," p. 650, "The Oval Portrait," p. 658 and "Lines Composed A Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey," p. 666.  Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #13, work on Vocabulary List #14 and complete its review sheet.

Congratulations!!! The Research Unit is over!!!  On Monday you'll turn in the final copies of your research project.  Tuesday and through the rest of the week we'll look at English literature from the Romantic Period.

We'll continue our work with Sentence Classification this week.  You'll be given another sentence worksheet and will be asked to find the Independent and Subordinate Clauses in each sentence, then will be asked to classify the sentences as either simple, compound, complex, or compound/complex. We'll review your answers together in class. On Thursday you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #12, and will work on Vocabulary List #13 and its review sheet.

12th Academic English
We're coming down to the wire on the Research Writing Project.  You'll continue writing, editing and revising your position paper throughout the week.  On Tuesday you'll hand in your Works Cited page.  Thursday, you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #12.  Don't forget -- your Research Project is due at the start on class on Monday, March 17th!!!

This week we'll continue our work with Sentence Classification.  We will check your answers on the first worksheet given to you last Friday, then will continue practice with another worksheet.  Later in the week, hopefully, we will take a test on Sentence Classification, then begin editing and revising work.

12th Academic English
This week we'll continue work on the research project.  You'll turn in your outline for the paper on Wednesday then continue working on developing the final draft of your paper.  Remember to strictly follow MLA format in developing the remaining components for this project!  If you run into problems make sure you talk with Mr. Lucas.

It has been a rough two weeks of winter weather.  However, I think we are back on track.  This week you will take a Sentence Analysis Test on Tuesday, then will begin work with Sentence Classification using clauses.  On Thursday of this week you will take Vocabulary Quiz #11 and begin work on Vocabulary List #12.  A Reading Response will be due by Friday.

12th Academic English
It has been difficult to meet the research deadlines with so many interruptions to our regular school schedule and I'm glad that so many of you have been keeping up with the work!  The next and last set of Research Documents will be due on Thursday of this week.  You'll also take Vocabulary Quiz #11 on Thursday.  We'll talk about the next phases of the research project later this week.  Keep up your good work with the project!!

Week of February 3, 2014
11th Academic English
This week we will continue our grammar work.  We'll focus on Sentence Analysis and use the notation taught to you in class to identify the Parts of the Sentence.  On Friday, you'll take Vocabulary Quiz 10 and will begin work on Vocabulary List 11.  Right now, the plan is to take a test on Sentence Analysis on Monday, 2/10.  However, we will adjust that test date dependent on how well you understand Sentence Analysis by the end of this week.

12th Academic English
This week you'll continue work on your research project.  At the start of class on Wednesday, you'll turn in the first set of seven Bibliography/Research Documentation Sheets.  If you haven't done so already, refer to the requirements/example sheet given to you at the start of the project to help you complete this documentation. On Friday, you'll take Vocabulary Quiz 10.  Make sure you keep up with the workload for this project and talk with me should you run into problems.  It is very important that you use your time wisely!

On Monday you will turn in your Specific Topic and will take Vocabulary Quiz #9.  Tuesday through Friday we'll continue work on the research project.  Don't forget that your Thesis Statement is due on Wednesday.

Week of January 13, 2014

The crazy weather has really forced us to adjust plans for the end of the first semester.  Check below for midterm exam schedules and "catch-up" work.

11th Academic English
Midterms will be given this week as follows -- 2nd period, Tuesday, 1/14; 4th period, Thursday, 1/6, 5th period, Friday 1/17.  4th and 5th periods--we will meet on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, but remember, these periods on those days are silent study halls.  You should be reviewing for your midterm exams during those times.  We'll finish viewing Hamlet after midterms are completed.

12th Academic English
Midterms will be given this week as follows -- 1st period, Tuesday, 1/14; 6th period, Wednesday 1/15; 3rd period, Thursday 1/16.  Make sure you are prepared for your midterms.  We will begin the research project once we finish with midterm exams.
