Week of December 16, 2013
11th Academic English
We'll wrap up our study of Shakespeare's Hamlet this week.  On Tuesday you'll take the Act IV quiz.  On Thursday you'll take the final test for this unit.  When we return after our Christmas break, we'll watch a film version of this classic play.  Midterms are just around the corner, so make sure you stay on top of your work.  Have a fantastic Christmas Break!!!

This week you'll finish your work on "The Prologue" from The Canterbury Tales.  On Wednesday and Thursday we'll work together on "The Nun's Priest Tale" pp. 119-137.   When we return from our break, we'll work together on "The Pardoner's Tale" pp. 141-150.  Midterm Exams are just around the corner, so make sure you stay on top of your work for this course.  Have a fantastic Christmas Break!!!!!

We'll finish the film Becket this week.  The essay asking  you to analyze the concept of hero as seen through Beowulf, King Arthur and Becket will be due on Monday, December 9th.  Later in the week we'll begin work on The Canterbury Tales.  Consult your second quarter calendars for specifics.

This week we'll wrap up our study of Arthurian legend.  On Tuesday you'll take a test that covers both Arthurian legend and the epic poem, Beowulf.  After the test and into Wednesday we'll begin our preliminary work to prepare for our study of The Canterbury Tales.  Have a great Thanksgiving break!!

This week we'll continue our look at Shakespeare's Hamlet.  On Tuesday, you will take a quiz on Act I and will receive the Act II study guide.  We'll also go over Vocabulary List #6 and its review sheet on Tuesday.  On Thursday you'll turn in Reading Response #5, will take Vocabulary Quiz #6 and will work on Vocabulary List #7.  Don't forget that The Crucible project is due on Friday.

This week we'll continue our study of Arthurian literature.  On Tuesday, we'll go over Vocabulary List #6 and its review sheet.  We'll work together on "Morte d'Arthur," pp. 176-184 in your literature anthology.  On Thursday you'll turn in Reading Response #5, will take Vocabulary Quiz #6 and will work on Vocabulary List #7.  The test on Beowulf and Arthurian Legend is moved from Friday to Monday, November 25th.

This week we'll begin work on Shakespeare's Hamlet.  You'll receive a copy of the play and the study guide for Act I.  We'll prepare to study this work by viewing and taking notes on two documentaries, Why Shakespeare? and William Shakespeare, A Life of Drama.  Make sure you have ready for Monday your bibliography and note cards for The Crucible project.  The Map/Outline work for this project is due on Friday.

12th Academic English
This week we will begin a study of Arthurian Legend.  To prepare for this you will view and take notes on two documentaries, In Search of Camelot and King Arthur.  We'll begin our literary studies with "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight."  Don't forget to have your take home essay test ready for submission on Friday at the start of your class period.

This week we will begin to wrap up our study of Arthur Miller's The Crucible.  On Tuesday, you will take the Act III quiz and on Thursday you will take the Act IV quiz.  We'll continue to read together and discuss these final two acts of the play.  On Monday, November 4th, you will take the final test on this drama.  The project bibliography and note cards due date has been moved to Monday, November 11th.

This week we will continue our study of Shakespeare's MacBeth.  On Tuesday, you will take the Act II quiz and on Thursday you will take the Act IV quiz.  We'll continue to read together and discuss this play throughout the week.  On Tuesday, November 5th, you will take the Act V quiz and on Wednesday November 6th you will take the final test on this play.

This week we'll continue working with MacBeth.  On Monday and Tuesday we'll read together and discuss Act Three.  Wednesday, you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #4, will hand in Reading Response #3 and will work on Vocabulary List #5.  Thursday you'll finish up work on the vocabulary list and will work on the Act Four study guide for MacBeth.  On Friday we'll attend the performance of MacBeth coming to our auditorium!

On Wednesday you'll take a test on Acts One and Two of this work, then will finish up the Act Three study guide.  Thursday we'll work together on Act Three.  Don't forget that you'll have a quiz on Act Three on Tuesday of next week.

This week we'll continue our study of Shakespeare's MacBeth.  On Tuesday you'll have some time to finish the Act Three study guide given to you last week.  You will take the Act Two quiz on Wednesday and will finish work on the Act Three Study guide.  On Thursday we'll work together with Act Three.  Make sure you are prepared to take both a quiz on Act Three and a test on the first three acts of MacBeth some time next week.

This week we'll continue our study of Arthur Miller's The Crucible.  You will finish the Act One study guide and will be quizzed on that later in the week.  We'll discuss McCarthyism and its role in the creation of this play, the atmosphere in 1692 Salem, and the personality traits of some of the main characters.  We'll also begin to work with a plot diagram to help you analyze this play.  Be sure to take good notes during class discussions!

On Monday, you will have time to work on the Beowulf project.  This project is due at the start of class on October 7th.  Tuesday we'll discuss Elizabethan England and its influence on Shakespeare's works.  We'll begin work with Shakespeare's MacBeth, reading together and discussing Act One of this work.  Make sure you are accurately completing the study guide for Act One.  Take good notes and ask questions during class discussions!

After a Homecoming Spirit Week delay, this week we'll finally finish our work with Early American Personal Narratives.  On Monday we'll discuss both "The General History of Virginia" and "Of Plymouth Plantation."  Tuesday, we'll review Vocabulary List #2 and its review sheet, then begin viewing a documentary on the Salem Witch Trials.  Wednesday you'll take a test on the Early American Personal Narratives, then finish viewing the documentary.  Thursday is Vocabulary Quiz #2, work on Vocabulary List #3, and turn in the first Reading Response assignment.  On Friday we'll begin our study of The Crucible.

After a Homecoming Spirit Week delay, this week we'll finish our study of the epic poem Beowulf.  We'll discuss the poem and its literary devices, then take a test on the work on Friday.  Thursday you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #2, will work on Vocabulary List #3, and turn in the first Reading Response assignment.  On Friday, you'll continue work on your Beowulf project.

This week we'll continue our study of the narrative accounts of early American settlers.  You will read and take notes on a selection from "The General History of Virginia," pp. 72-77 and on a selection from "Of Plymouth Plantation," pp. 78-84.  This is difficult reading, so you will need to take your time with both selections.  We will discuss both selections in class and you'll be able to add to or clarify your notes at that time.  Later in the week, you will take a test on all of the information about Native American Literature and Early American Literature.  Don't forget this week is Homecoming Spirit Week 2013!!  Have fun and participate as much as possible!

This week we will continue our study of the epic poem, Beowulf.  You will read independently and take notes as indicated on your course calendars.  We will work together on selections from and discuss the poem in class.  On Monday, September 23rd, you will take a test on Beowulf and will begin work on the Beowulf project.  Don't forget --  this week is Homecoming Spirit Week 2013!!  This is your last Spirit Week as a high school student, so make the most of all the activities and fun planned for the week!!

We've spent the first two weeks of school doing a lot of prep work -- reading, outlining, reviewing -- and now we're ready to evaluate your progress.  This week you'll have some time to work on your Creation Myths, due on Friday, September 13th.  Don't forget that this is an assignment worth 100 points.  Make sure your writing is excellent!  Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday we'll work on some Early American Explorer journal excerpts. On Thursday, September 12th, you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #1 and will work on Vocabulary List #2 and its review sheet.  Make it a fantastic junior year!!

We've spent some time working with early Anglo-Saxon writings and studying the earliest beginnings of our English literature heritage.  On Wednesday,  you'll take a test on this introductory information and on the three Anglo-Saxon Exile Poems.  Don't forget that your writing on Exile is due on Monday, September 16th.  Thursday you will take Vocabulary Quiz #1 and will work on Vocabulary List #2 and its review sheet.  We'll also begin our study of Beowulf this week.  Make your last year in high school the best year ever!!

Just one small, last detail -- FINAL EXAMS!!  Make sure you are well-prepared for your Final Exam.  Use the study guides, the final review sheet, notes, text and the essay reviews to get yourself ready for the test.  Have your literature anthology ready to hand in on the day of your final exam.

This week we'll continue our look at British literature from the Modern and Postmodern eras.  You'll outline biographical information about both D.H. Lawrence and Graham Greene, found on p. 1174 in the literature anthology.  We'll read together and discuss "The Rocking Horse Winner," p. 1176+ and "A Shocking Accident," p. 1190+.  On Thursday you will take the last vocabulary quiz of your Academic English career, Vocabulary Quiz #17!!  Can Graduation be far away if you are on the last vocabulary quiz?!?!?  Don't forget to continue work on the Character Analysis project, due on Thursday, May 16th.  If you finish the project early, please hand it in.

This week we will conclude our study of Modern American Literature.  On Monday, you will read and outline biographical information on John Updike, p. 1000 in the literature anthology, then take notes on the literary devices found on page 1001.  As the week progresses, we will read together and discuss, "The Brown Chest," pp. 1002-1008 in the literature anthology.  On Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #16, will work on Vocabulary List #17 and its review sheet, and will hand in Summary #14.  On Friday, you will take a test on the Modern Period in American Literature.

This week we will continue our study of the Modern Period in British Literature.  On Monday we will discuss "The Demon Lover," pp. 1032-38 in the literature anthology.  Throughout the rest of the week we'll work with "The Fiddle," pp. 1078-1084, "The Lady In The Looking Glass; A Reflection," pp. 1158-1163 and "The First Year of My Life," pp. 1164-1170.  On Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #16, will work on Vocabulary List #17 and complete the Vocabulary List #17 review sheet.  Don't forget to continue work on your Character Analysis Project, due on May 16th.

This week we will continue our look at literature from the American Modern Period.  Monday we'll read and discuss Thurber's "The Night The Ghost Got In" pp. 896-902.  On Tuesday you will take a quiz on"In Another Country" and will begin to read and outline "Prosperity and Protest,"pp. 958-965 in the literature anthology.  Wednesday we will discuss these notes and will review for a quiz on "The Night The Ghost Got In."  You'll take that quiz on Thursday, then begin work on a selection by John Updike.

This week we'll wrap up our look at the British Victorian Period.  Monday we'll continue our discussion of the selection from Jane Eyre.  Tuesday you will take a test on the Victorian Period, then will begin outlining "A Time of Rapid Change," pp. 950-960 in the literature anthology.  Thursday and Friday we will work on a selection by Elizabeth Bowen,"The Demon Lover, " pp. 1030-1038.  Please remember that you should be working on the Character Analysis project that is due in mid-May.

This wee we will continue our look at the American Modern Period in literature.  Monday we will discuss Fitzgerald's short story, "Winter Dream" in preparation for a quiz on Tuesday.  We'll also look at Steinbeck's "The Turtle" in preparation for a quiz on that selection on Wednesday.  You'll read and outline biographical information on Ernest Hemingway, then read his short story "In Another Country" (pp. 807-14)  On Thursday, you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #15 and work on Vocabulary List #16.  Don't forget that your magazine article summary is due on Thursday!

This week we will continue our look at Victorian British Literature.  On Monday, you'll take notes during a power point lecture on The Victorian Period.  Tuesday and Wednesday we'll look at the poetry of the Brownings (p.834-44) and will discuss what makes this Victorian.  On Thursday, you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #15 and work on Vocabulary List #16.  On Friday, you will begin work on a selection from the novel, Jane Eyre.(p. 865-72)

When you come back from our Easter break, we'll begin a look at Modern American literature.  On Wednesday and Friday you will read and outline "Disillusion, Defiance and Discontent," pp. 704-13 in the literature anthology.  On Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #14 and will work on List #15.  Even though your calendar says you have a summary due on Thursday, you will be given extra time to complete it.  The summary will be due on Monday, April 8th.

This week we will view the film version of the novel, O Pioneers!  While watching the film, you will note similarities and differences between the novel we read in class and the film version.  At the conclusion of the film we will discuss those similarities and differences.  We will also discuss how effectively the film portrayed the events, settings and characters from the novel.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue our study of the British Romantic Period.  We will read several short stories and will discuss the Romantic elements found in each.  Later in the week, you will begin reading and outlining "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," p. 686+.  In your outline, you will be required to cite examples of Romanticism found in this piece.

This week we'll finish up our study of O Pioneers!  Throughout the week you'll finish the Part Five study guide.  On Friday we'll take the final test for this novel.  Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday we'll continue or review and clarification of Sentence Classification.  We'll continue to go over test corrections, practice classification with text exercises and use a worksheet to practice this skill.  Thursday you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #13 and will work with Vocabulary List #14.

This week we'll begin a study of the Romantic Period in British Literature.  You'll read and outline the introductory notes on pp. 614-621 in the literature anthology, then will add to your notes during a power point presentation on the Romantic Period.  We'll read and discuss "Introduction to Frankenstein," p. 650, "The Oval Portrait," p. 658 and "Lines Composed A Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey," p. 666.  On Thursday you will take Vocabulary Quiz #13 and will work with Vocabulary List #14.

This week you'll wrap up your work with the Research Project.  Monday and Tuesday we'll be in the library finishing up your final drafts.  On Wednesday at the start of the period, you'll turn in your final draft of the position paper.  We'll begin viewing a version of Shakespeare's work, MacBeth on Wednesday and continue through the rest of the week.

This week you'll continue your work on the Research Project.  Monday and Tuesday you will work on creating both the Works Cited page and the Final Draft of the project.  Your Works Cited page is due on Wednesday.  On Thursday you will take Vocabulary Quiz #12 and will work on Vocabulary List #13.  On Friday you'll have more library time to work on your Final Draft.  Don't forget that the Final Draft for this project is due on Wednesday, March 13th!!  Stay up to date with your work!!

This week we'll continue grammar work in Sentence Classification.  Monday through Thursday we will use worksheets and text exercises to identify clauses and classify sentences.  On Friday you will have a quiz on Part II of O Pioneers! Be sure to complete your Part II study guide by Thursday of this week.  Next week you will take a test on Sentence Classification, so be prepared!

On Monday you will turn in Documentation Packet #3.  This week we will discuss MLA formatting, preparing a topic outline in Harvard format, preparing a Works Cited page, and creating your final draft of the research project.  You must make sure that you follow all procedures and formatting correctly for the final phases of the research project.  Your Outline will be due this Friday, March 1st.  Works Cited page is due on Wednesday, March 6th and the Final Draft of the project is due on Wednesday, March 13th.

This week we'll begin to look at classifying sentences according to structure.  We'll review information on Clauses, will identify both Independent and Subordinate Clauses in sentences, then will use that information to classify sentences.  We'll also continue our work with the novel, O Pioneers!.  On Tuesday, you will take a quiz on Part One of this novel.  Friday, you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #11, will turn in Newsweek summary #10, and will work on Vocabulary List #12.

On Tuesday, you will turn in Documentation Packet #2 and will continue processing research for Documentation Packet #3, due on Monday, February 25th.  Library work will continue on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.  On Friday, you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #11 and will work on Vocabulary List #12.  Make sure you keep pace with the work you need to complete for this research project.

On Monday, we will begin work with the novel O Pioneers!  by American novelist Willa Cather.  You'll work on this novel throughout the third quarter, so make sure you have the novel and its related materials with you in class at all times.  Tuesday through Friday we will review the Parts of Speech and the Parts of the Sentence.  In addition to the review, you'll learn a system of notation that will help you practice Sentence Analysis.  You'll be working on exercises in the grammar text and with worksheets that I will distribute to you.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue our work with the Research Project.  On Tuesday you will hand in your thesis statement. You will continue to gather information for this project and will begin to process and document this information using MLA format.  The first set of 10 resources and their notes is due on Wednesday, February 6th.  Make sure you use class time and homework wisely to complete all of the elements of this project.  Talk with me if you run into problems!

Week of January 21, 2013
11th Academic English
This week you'll finish the Keystone Literature Exams.  On Tuesday and through Thursday we will watch a film version of Shakespeare's Hamlet.  Friday you will take Vocabulary Quiz #9, will turn in Newsweek summary #8 and will work on Vocabulary List #10.

12th Academic English
Monday through Thursday we will be working on the Research Position Paper project.  We will use library resources to formulate a General Topic, due Wednesday, a Specific Topic, due Friday, and a Thesis Statement, due Tuesday 1/29.  On Friday you will take Vocabulary Quiz #9 and will work in class on Vocabulary List #10 and its review sheet.

Week of January 14, 2013
11th Academic English
Midterm Exams continue all day on Monday and for 5th period on Tuesday morning.  On Tuesday we'll talk about the Keystone Literature Exams you'll be taking this week.  We'll review some literary devices you'll be expected to know and will talk about some other items you'll see on the test.  Wednedsay and Thursday, you will take the Literature Exams.  Half of our students from class will be testing and half will be in class each day.  While in class, you'll work on finishing Vocabulary list #9 and completing Newsweek summary #8.  Friday we'll begin viewing the film adaptation of Hamlet.

12th Academic English
Midterm Exams continue all day on Monday and for 5th period on Tuesday morning.  Tuesday and Wednesday you'll use class time to complete Vocabulary list #9 and Newsweek summary #8.  on Thursday and into Friday we will begin work on the Research Project.  We'll discuss the project requirements, review the procedure for completing the work, and discuss project due dates.

Happy New Year!  This week we will finish our study of Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet.  We'll read together and discuss Act V of this play.  On Friday, you will take a quiz on Act V.  Monday of next week you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #8 and will turn in Newsweek summary #7.  Tuesday of next week you'll take a test on the entire play, Hamlet.
