Week of December 18, 2017
11th Academic English
We'll finish up our analysis of The Crucible this week.  On Monday you'll take the Act IV quiz.  Tuesday you'll take the final test on this unit.  We'll watch a film version of this play then will discuss the similarities and differences between the play we've read in class and the film adaptation.  Make sure you are ready for a fantastic holiday vacation!

12th Academic English
This week we'll continue our analysis of Shakespeare's MacBeth.  On Monday we'll finish our discussion of Act III and will begin work on Act IV.  On Tuesday you will take the Act III quiz and continue work with Act IV.  Wednesday is the first test in this unit.  The test will cover the notes on The English Renaissance and Acts I, II and III of this play.  Enjoy the holiday break!

SAT Prep
This week you will finish the first Practice Test from the SAT Workbook, then will begin work on Chapter 23.  Enjoy the holiday break!

11th Academic English
This week we will work with Act IV of The Crucible.  We will read together and discuss this act then you will take a quiz on Act IV.  You will also take a test on the entire play either on Friday or on Monday.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #7, will turn in reading response #7 and will work on vocabulary list #8.

12th Academic English
This week we will read together and discuss Act III of MacBeth.  When we finish our discussion you will take a quiz on Act III.  Since we're at the mid-point of the play, you will take a test on the first three acts and on the information concerning the English Renaissance.  This test will happen either on Friday or on Monday.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #7, will turn in reading response #7 and will work on vocabulary list #8.

SAT Prep
During the first half of the week you will practice editing and revising skills using selections 11 through 15 in the Editing and Revising Workbook.  Later in the week you will work on the first Reading practice test in your SAT Workbooks, pp. 723-750

This week we will read together and discuss Act III of The Crucible.  Make sure you finish the Act III study guide.  You will take a quiz on Act III when we finish our discussion.  Later in the week you will have some time to work on reading response #7.  On Friday we will have a guest speaker with us from McCann's School of Business.

This week we will read together and discuss Act II of MacBeth.  You should be finished the study guide for this act by Tuesday.  You will take a quiz on Act II when we finish our work with Act II.  Later in the week you will have some class time to work on reading response #7.  On Friday we will have a guest speaker with us from McCann's School of Business.

SAT Prep
This week we will work on chapters 17 and 18 in the SAT Premier Workbook.  Later in the week we will use the Editing and Revising workbooks to complete selections 11 through 15.

This is a busy week for us.  We'll complete our work with Act II of The Crucible.  On Wednesday you'll take a quiz on Act II and will begin work on Act III.  On Thursday you'll take a test on Acts I and II then continue work with Act III.  On Friday you'll turn in reading response #6, will take vocabulary quiz #6 and will work on vocabulary list #7.  For those of you going to the Winter Formal on Saturday, have a great time!

On Tuesday and Wednesday we'll read together and discuss some scenes from Act I of MacBeth.  Thursday you'll take a quiz on Act I of MacBeth and will begin work on Act II of this tragedy.  On Friday you'll turn in reading response #6, will take vocabulary quiz #6 and will work on vocabulary list #7.  For those of you going to the Winter Formal on Saturday, have a great time!

This week we will continue our study of Arthur Miller's The Crucible.  We will read together and discuss Act I of this drama.  You will check your study guide questions for Act I as we read together and discuss.  On Thursday, you will take vocabulary quiz #5, will turn in reading response #5 and will work on vocabulary list #6.  On Friday, you will take the quiz for Act I of The Crucible, then will begin work on Act II.

This week we will continue our look at The Canterbury Tales.  On Monday you will finish your work with "The Prologue." On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will read together and discuss "The Nun's Priest Tale."  On Thursday, you will take vocabulary quiz #5, will turn in reading response #5 and will work on vocabulary list #6.  On Friday, you will begin work with "The Pardoner's Tale."

On Monday and through Wednesday, we will work together on Chapter 13 in the SAT Premier workbook.  Thursday and Friday, we will work together on Chapter 14 in the same book.

Week of October 30, 2017
11th Academic English
This week we will begin our study of Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible.  On Monday and Tuesday we will watch and take notes on a documentary about the Salem Witch Trial.  Wednesday we will do some preliminary work to get ready to analyze this classic American dramatic work.  Later in the week you will work on the next reading response and will begin work on Act I of The Crucible.

12th Academic English
This week we will begin an analysis of Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales.  You will begin reading and notating "The Prologue" from this work, pp.128+ in the literature text.  On Thursday you will work on the next reading response.

SAT Prep
On Monday and Tuesday, the first quarter students will review and ask questions about any of the chapters or strategies we studied.  On Wednesday we'll begin work with the 2nd quarter roster students.  We will review some basic grammar and editing skills, then will practice those using selections from the Revising and Editing workbooks.

This week you will take a Sentence Classification test on Monday.  Depending on the results of that test we either will begin a unit on the American Drama, The Crucible, or will review Sentence Classification work for a retest on that material later in the week.  On Thursday, you will take vocabulary quiz #4, will turn in reading response #4 and will begin work on vocabulary list #5.

12th Academic English
On Monday you will take a test on Beowulf and Arthurian legend.  On Tuesday we will begin a unit on The Canterbury Tales.  You'll take some notes on this British classic, then will begin work on "The Prologue" of The Canterbury Tales, found in your text.  On Thursday, you will take vocabulary quiz #4, will turn in reading response #4 and will begin work on vocabulary list #5.

On Monday you will finish work with the first reading practice test found in your SAT workbook.  Tuesday we will review your answers to this practice test, then we will review Chapters 24 and 25 in this workbook.

11th Academic English
This week we will begin a focus on sentence classification.  Using worksheets and information from last week's power point presentation, you will practice identifying sentence structure and will classify those sentences using this information. Later in the week you will take vocabulary quiz #3, will turn in reading response #3 and will work on vocabulary list #4.

12th Academic English
This week we will take a look at some literature from Arthurian legend. We will read together and discuss "Sir Gawain and The Green Knight" and the last chapter from "Morte d'Arthur."  Later in the week you will take vocabulary quiz #3, will turn in reading response #3 and will work on vocabulary list #4.

SAT Prep
This week we will finish work with chapter 18 and chapter 23.  Remember to keep practicing the strategies we talk about in class -- mapping all reading selections, predicting responses to question stems, and careful understanding of how the test designers construct the assessment.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue our study of Beowulf. We will discuss the final sections of this epic poem and focus not only on events in the poem but on the characteristics of Beowulf that seem to embody qualities and values that are important to Anglo-Saxon culture.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz 2, will turn in reading response 2 and will work on vocabulary list 3.

11th Academic English
This week we will continue our work with Sentence Analysis.  We will check your answers to the worksheets you completed in class last week and will review for a test on Sentence Analysis.  That test will be scheduled for either Friday or Monday, depending on our worksheet review.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz 2, will turn in reading response 2 and will work on vocabulary list 3.

SAT Prep
This week we will spend a few days working with Chapter 17.  We will look at strategies to determine and author's point of view, to understand word/phrase choices, to distinguish between claims and counterclaims and to evaluate support evidence given in reading passages.  Later in the week you will work on a sample SAT test.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue our study of the epic poem Beowulf.  We will concentrate our discussions on the Anglo/Saxon societal values and mores reflected in both the narration of the story and in the epic hero Beowulf himself.  Later in the week you will have some class time to work on reading response #2.  When our analysis of Beowulf is complete you will take a test on this and other Anglo/Saxon information.

11th Academic English
This week we will continue our work with Sentence Analysis.  You will analyze worksheet sentences and we will check your answers together.  On Wednesday and Thursday you will take the first round of CDT Tests.  On Friday you will have some class time to work on reading response #2. 

SAT Prep
On Monday we will complete work with Chapter 16.  Tuesday through Thursday you will work with the editing and revising workbooks, completing selections 6 through 10.  On Friday you will take the first SAT practice test in this course.

On Monday you'll take a quiz on the Parts of Speech, then we will begin work with the Parts of the Sentence and Sentence Analysis.  Make sure you have vocabulary list #1 and its worksheet ready to check on Tuesday.  On Thursday, you'll take vocabulary quiz #1, will turn in reading response #1 and will work on vocabulary list #2.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue work with the epic poem, Beowulf.  On Monday we will look at the introductory stanzas you read and notated and talk about some of the Anglo/Saxon cultural influences found in these stanzas.  We'll continue working with the poem, looking at several different analytical points throughout the week.  Make sure vocabulary list #1 and its worksheet are ready for Tuesday.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #1, will turn in reading response #1 and will work on vocabulary list #2.

SAT Prep
During the week we will work on chapters 14, 15 and 16 in the SAT Premier workbook.  You will be graded on two of the practice exercises for these chapters.  Check you calendars for grading days.

Welcome back!!  Let's make this year the best year of your high school career!!

12th Academic English
This week you will have some time to complete the first reading response of the year.  This writing assignment is due on Thursday, September 14th at the start of class.  Wednesday we will talk about the Anglo/Saxon exile poetry you read in class last week.  We'll use this discussion as the basis for your first major writing assignment when you will be asked to write about a time you experienced exile in your life.  This work is due on Friday, September 15th.  Later in the week we will begin work with the epic Anglo/Saxon poem, Beowulf.

11th Academic English
This week we will begin our grammar review.  We'll start with the Parts of Speech and will practice identifying those in sample sentences from worksheets you will receive in class.  Make sure you are prepared for a quiz on the Parts of Speech early next week.

SAT Prep
Last week we practiced our editing and revising skills.  This week we will begin looking at the structure of the SAT Reading tests, and will practice strategies for deciphering this section of the SAT.  You'll use your SAT Practice books to develop these skills.

This week we will continue work with the review packets.  Make sure you are carefully reviewing everything in each "Key" before you take the end test for that Key.  You will receive a test grade for your packet work, so make sure you complete this work to the best of your ability!

This week we will finish up our study of American literature from the Modern/Postmodern period.  You will take a test on this information midweek.  We will also begin a look at John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men.  You will begin reading this short novel and will respond to study guide questions as you read.  Make sure you are keeping up with work in this course as your final exam is quickly approaching!

12th Academic English
This week we will complete our study of British literature from the Modern/Postmodern era.  You will read several short stories that are good examples of the ideals and techniques Modern/ Postmodern writers used in their works.  We will have a test on this information early next week.  On Thursday of this week you will take vocabulary quiz #16, the last vocabulary quiz of the year!!  Keep up with work these next few weeks!  Final exams and Graduation are just around the corner!!

Early in the week you will finish your news article summary.  We will practice some editing and revising skills using  a workbook filled with short articles that need revision.  We will begin this activity by working together in class, but later in the week you will be working on your own.  Early next week you will be tested on these skills.

You will be working on a project involving F. Scott Fitzgerald's Jazz Age Tales.  This short story project will be explained in class on Monday.  Make sure you use your time wisely to complete this major assignment.

We will continue our look at British Romantic Age literature this week.  In addition to the poetry already studied, you will read a selection from Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein.  Later in the week you will work on a list of review questions in preparation for a test on the Romantic Age.

This week we will continue our study of British Romantic Age literature.  We will read and discuss "Lines Composed A Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey," pp. 553-558, "The Prelude," pp. 5559-561 and "Ode to A Nightingale," pp. 569-573.  Look for elements that identify these poems as Romantic.

SAT Prep
This week we will finish up our practice and review for the Reading/Writing portion of the SAT exam.  We will review grammar, writing and structure information in chapters 23 and 24, then will review practice tests found in the workbook.  Later in the week we will review of summary of the information you studied this quarter.

BEWARE THE IDES OF MARCH!!  Winter Storm/Blizzard Stella did a number on us but, just like true Spartans, we can handle it!!  This week we will readjust and get back on track to finish up the third quarter very successfully!

This week we will finish work with Act IV of Hamlet.  You will take a quiz near the end of the week on this act.  We will begin reviewing Act V of this tragedy and will plan to finish our work with Hamlet sometime next week.  Vocabulary quiz #12 has been moved to Thursday, so make sure you are ready to ace that quiz.  You can hand in news article 12 whenever you finish, but definitely give this to Mr. Lucas by Thursday.

Monday we will continue conferencing about your plans for your research project.  On Wednesday you will turn in a correctly formatted Works Cited page.  Make sure you are drafting your final writing for this project as the Final Draft is due on Monday, March 13th.

This week you will continue to gather and process documents for the research project.  The last document packet set is now due on Thursday, February 23 at the start of the class period.  We will also discuss the format you must use both for the text of the research writing and for the works cited page.  Please make sure you keep up with the work required for this project.

Week of February 13, 2017
11th English
This week we will review your work from the Character Motivation activity we started last week.  On Tuesday and Wednesday we will be taking the second round of CDT testing, as required by our district.  On Thursday we will finish up work with the Motivation activity, then will begin reading together Act II of Hamlet.

11th Academic English
On Monday you will take vocabulary quiz #10 then we will review the Hamlet Act I study guide.  On Tuesday and Wednesday you will be taking the second round of CDT testing, as required by our district.  On Thursday you will take a quiz on Act I of Hamlet, then we will be reading together and discussing Act II.

12th Academic English
On Monday you will take vocabulary quiz #10, then will continue to gather and process information for the research project.  You will continue gathering and processing information throughout the week.  On Thursday you will turn in document packet #2 at the start of the class period.  Note the due date change from Wednesday to Thursday for this submission.  The final document package due date remains Wednesday, February 22nd.  Please make sure you keep up with the work for this project and talk with me should you have any problems.

SAT Prep
On Monday and Tuesday you will work on units 10 through 15 in the Editing and Revising books.  This is a graded assignment, so make sure you are taking your time to correctly answer the questions at the end of each unit.  Wednesday and Thursday we will begin work on Chapters 16 and 17 of the SAT Prep book.

On Monday you will take a quiz on Act I of Hamlet, then we will work together on the Character Motivation activity you started last week.  On Tuesday we will review vocabulary unit 10, then will begin reading together and discussing Act II of Hamlet.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #10 and will work on vocabulary unit #11.  Friday we will finish up our discussion of Act II.

11th Academic English
On Monday we will continue our discussion of Act I of Hamlet.  Tuesday you will take a quiz on Act I, then we will review vocabulary list #10.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #10, will turn in reading response #10 and will begin work on vocabulary unit #11.  Throughout the rest of the week we will read together and discuss Act II of Hamlet.

12th Academic English
This week you will continue to gather and process information for the research project.  On Wednesday you will turn in, at the start of the period, research document packet #1.  On Thursday you will take a quiz on vocabulary list #10.  Make sure you continue to conference with me while you gather and process your information for this project.  Don't procrastinate!!

SAT Prep
On Monday and Tuesday we will finish work with Chapter 15.  Wednesday through Friday we will work on Editing and Revising units 9 through 14.  You will turn in your work on these Editing and Revising units for a grade.

Week of January 30, 2017
11th English
This week we will continue our work with Act I of Hamlet.  We will discuss the events in Act I and will talk about character motivation--why the characters in the play do the things they do.  You will take a quiz on the Act I study guide, then will begin work on Act II.

11th Academic English
On Monday you will view a documentary, "Why Shakespeare?", that will give you an understanding of Shakespeare's influence on our present day lives.  We will read together and discuss Act I of Hamlet, then you will take a quiz on the Act I study guide.  After the quiz, you will begin work on Act II of this drama

12th Academic English
This week you will begin to gather and process the information you will need for this research writing assignment.  In small groups, you will take a brief tour of our library and discuss the various resources available to you for this project.  Your Thesis Statement is due on Tuesday.

SAT Prep
We will continue work in the SAT Prep workbooks.  This week we will review the work you did on Chapter 13, then will work on both Chapter 14 and 15.

11th English
This week we will discuss Act I of Hamlet.  By now you should have finished reading Act I and completing the Act I study guide.  On Monday we will review vocabulary unit #9 and its worksheet.  You will take a quiz on this unit on Thursday, then will begin work on vocabulary unit #10.  Later in the week you will take a quiz on Act I of Hamlet.

11th Academic English
This week we will begin work on Act I of Shakespeare's Hamlet.  You will begin reading this act and will complete the Act I study guide as you read.  We will discuss this act together midweek.  On Friday you will take vocabulary quiz #9, will turn in reading response #9, and will work on vocabulary unit #10.

12th Academic English
This week you will continue work on the research project.  On Tuesday you will turn in your General Topic and on Thursday you will turn in your Specific Topic.  Later in the week we will discuss the format for the Thesis Statement and will review the documents you will complete as you gather your resources for this writing.  On Friday you will take vocabulary quiz #9.

SAT Prep
Early in the week you will complete your first assignment with the editing and revising books.  Later in the week we will begin work with the SAT prep book, looking at chapters 13 (329-350) and 14 (351-368).

On Thursday and Friday we will begin reviewing editing and revising skills.  We will talk about common grammar, punctuation and style skills you already have, then will apply those skills using a revising and editing workbook.

This week we will begin our study of Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.  On Monday you will take some notes while watching a documentary on Shakespeare's life.  After we  finish the documentary, we will begin reading and analyzing the first act of this play.  On Friday you will have time to review for your midterm exam.  The exam will take place on Tuesday, January 17th.

This week you will complete your independent study work from unit 5.  Be prepared to hand in the written work on Thursday.  On Friday you will have time to review for your midterm exam.  The exam will take place on Tuesday, January 17th.
