Week of January 4, 2010
11th Academic English
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! This week we will finish our study of the novel O Pioneers! We will discuss Parts Four and Five in class, then take a quiz on those parts. On Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #8 and turn in your Newsweek Summary. You will finish defining list #9 and complete Review Sheet #9. On Friday, we will begin to review for the Midterm Exam.

12th Academic English

This week we will continue our work both with Sentence Classification and with the novel O Pioneers! On Monday and Tuesday, you will continue to practice sentence classification using a worksheet and using sentences you create. On Wednesday, you will be given time to finish the Part Three study guide for O Pioneers! On Thursday, you will take a test on Sentence Classification. On Friday, you will take a quiz on the Part Three study guide and will be given the Part Four study guide. On Monday of next week you will take a comprehensive test on the first half of O Pioneers!

12th Academic English
This week we will finish our study of Shakespeare's MacBeth. On Monday and Tuesday, we will work with Act IV. On Wednesday, you will receive the Act V study guide and will have class time to complete that. On Thursday, you will take the Act IV quiz and on Friday you will take the Act V quiz. On Monday of next week you will take a comprehensive test on MacBeth.

This week we will continue our work with Sentence Classification and Clauses by completing worksheets. You will be given worksheets to analyze, then we will check those answers on the board. Don't forget that Vocabulary Quiz #7 will happen on Thursday. Your Newsweek summary is also due at that time. On Friday, we will have a quiz on the Part Two study guide for O Pioneers! Make sure you complete that study guide before Friday.

This week we will continue or work with MacBeth. You will have a quiz on Act III on Tuesday, and will have a test on Acts I, II and III on Wednesday. Don't forget that Vocabulary Quiz #7 will happen on Thursday. Your Newsweek summary is also due at that time. On Friday we will work on the Act IV study guide for MacBeth.

11th Academic English
This week we will continue our grammar studies by focusing on clauses. You will practice identifiying clauses in sentences by labeling them either independent or subordinate. You will use those labels to classify the sentences as either simple, compound, complex or compound-complex. We will use exercises in your grammar books, beginning on page 70, to do this work. I will also give you worksheets to practice what you have learned. Remember to keep up with your reading of O Pioneers! Keep up with your work by following the second quarter calendar given to you at the start of the quarter.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue or work with Shakespeare's MacBeth. You will finish the Act II study guide given to you last week. We will read together and discuss/analyze Act II of the play. When we finish, you will take the Act II quiz and will begin work with Act III. Keep up with your work by following the second quarter calendar given to you at the start of the quarter.

This week we will begin our work with the novel O Pioneers! by Willa Cather. You will be given a study guide to complete as you read Part One of this novel. Be sure to anwer the questions accurately and in detail. Later in the week we will continue our work with Sentence Analysis by practicing with more worksheets. On Thursday of this week you will take Vocabulary Quiz #6 and will work with list #7 and its review sheet. Don't forget that your Newsweek Summary is due on Thursday before you take the quiz!

Monday you will take the final test on The Canterbury Tales. Make sure you are prepared. We will begin our study of Shakespeare's play MacBeth this week by reading and taking notes on Act I. This week we will review the Parts of the Sentence. On Monday, you will be given a grammar book to use for our grammar studies. Keep your literature anthology in your locker until you are asked to bring it to class. We will work with exercises in the book on pp. 32-44. On Friday, we will begin work with the novel O Pioneers! You will receive a study guide to complete while you read Part One of this novel.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue our study of The Canterbury Tales by reading together "The Nun's Priest Tale" and "The Pardoner's Tale," pp. 119-150. You will summarize both tales in your notes and will take notes on our class discussions of each. On Friday, you will have a test on The Canterbury Tales. Make sure you have great notes on all of this material and that you study this information thoroughly for the test.

On Monday you will take a TEST on The Crucible. Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday we will watch the film version of this play, and you will note the similarities and the differences between this film version of the play and the version of the play we studied in class. On Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #5, will work on vocabulary list #6 and will complete the review sheet for vocabulary list #6.

12th Academic English
The essay test on Becket is due on Wednesday, November 4th!! NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED!! On Monday and Tuesday, we will begin an analysis of the sociological and historical climate of Medieval England by reading and outlining "Prepare to Read/A Closer Look" on pp. 90-93 of your literature anthology, and by taking notes during a class discussion of pilgrimages and the Canterbury Cathedral. On Wednesday and Friday, you will begin to analyze Medieval English life by reading and outlining "The Prologue" (pp. 94-115) of Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales. On Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #5, will work on vocabulary list #6 and will complete the review sheet for vocabulary list #6.

On Monday we will finish our discussion of Acts I and II of The Crucible. Tuesday we will take a test on Acts I and II, and will continue working on the Act III Study Guide. We will continue our work with Act III and will begin Act IV later this week.

12th Academic English
We will continue our work with the film Becket this week. When we finish viewing the film, you will have one class period to work on your essay for this film. The essay due date will be announced at a later time. Time permitting, we will begin our studies of The Canterbury Tales at the end of the week, but due to PSSA retesting, the time needed to complete the film is not yet determined. Once we finish the film, we will establish the work frames for the rest of the quarter.

This week we will continue our work with the play The Crucible. You will finish the Act II Study Guide and will take a quiz on Act II. You will have a test on Acts I and II of The Crucible on Thursday, October 22nd. On Friday October 23rd, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #4 and will work on Vocabulary List #5 and its review sheet.

On Monday we will wrap up our study of Arthurian literature and will prepare for a test. On Tuesday, October 20th, you will take a test on both Beowulf and Arthurian legend/literature. Wednesday and Thursday we will begin to watch the film Becket. You will be required to take notes on this film and, when we finish the film sometime next week, you will answer an essay test related to this film and our studies of heroes. On Friday, October 23rd, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #4 and will work on Vocabulary List #5 and its review sheet.

Monday and Tuesday are in-service days. This week we will continue our study of The Crucible. Make sure you complete the Act I Study Guide and are prepared for a quiz at the end of the week. You will receive the Act II Study Guide on Friday, 10/16.

Monday and Tuesday are in-service days. This week we will continue our analysis of Arthurian Legend literature. We will finish reading "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," pp. 162-175, and will work with "Morte d'Arthur," pp. 176-184. Be sure to take accurate notes on each of the selections and to identify heroic traits in Arthur that are similar to those found in Beowulf.

11th Academic English
This week we will finish our study of Steinbeck's novel, Of Mice and Men. We will take a quiz on the second study guide on Tuesday, and will take the final test on the novel on Wednesday. After the test, we will review the information that will be on the Final Exam for this course, then we will begin watching the film version of Of Mice and Men. Your final Newsweek Summary is due on Thursday. The Final Exam for this course takes place on Tuesday, May 26th, the day we return after Memorial Day.

The end of your 12th Academic English career is here! Final exams for seniors will be given this week. PLEASE make sure you are well-prepared for your exam. For some of you, your grade on this exam can mean the difference between graduating and not graduating, so be smart and study for this exam. Check your calendars for the exam schedule.

This week we will continue or study of Steinbeck's novel, Of Mice and Men. You should be prepared for a quiz on the study guide for chapters 1-3. On Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #17, the final vocabulary quiz of the school year! Newsweek Summary #18 is also due on Thursday. The end of the year is coming fast and furious! Make sure you stay on top of your assignments.

This week we will watch a film version of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. On Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #17, the final vocabulary quiz of the school year! Newsweek Summary #18 is also due on Thursday. Your final project on Frankenstein is due on Friday. Since many of you could use a good grade, make sure that you follow all directions for this project. Do not let things go until the last minute!! We will discuss the 12th Academic English final exam in class this week. This week we will finish working with the short stories from the American Modern and Postmodern Period. On Tuesday, May 5th, you will take a test on all of the information from The Modern and Postmodern Period. Wednesday, we will begin studying John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men. You will work on the first study guide for this novel as you read. Remember to consult your 4th quarter calendar regularly so you are prepared for all of the work we will finish by the end of the school year.

The end of your high school career is in sight!! This week we will finish our work with the British Modern/Postmodern Period literature. You will take a test on all of this information on Thursday, May 7th. On Friday you will continue your work on the Frankenstein project, preparing your material for final submission on Friday, May 15th. Make sure you stay on top of the work needed to complete this course. Some of you are behind schedule and will have a difficult time with the remainder of the year if you lag behind. You should have finished reading Frankenstein and should be working on the Character Analysis project given to you for this novel. This week we will begin studying and analyzing American Literature from the Modern and Post-modern periods. We will read and outline biography information on F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck and Ernest Hemingway, and will read "Winter Dreams," "The Turtle," and "In Another Country" from your literature anthology. Make sure you keep up with your work and follow the 4th quarter calendar since we're nearing the end of the school term.

This week we will continue studying and analyzing the Literature from the British Modern and Post-modern periods. You should have detailed notes from the introductory section on pages 950-960. We will read and analyze the short story "The Demon Lover" on pp. 1030-1038. On Friday you should finish reading the novel Frankenstein and should finish the study guide for this novel. We will begin work on the Frankenstein project next week. Be sure to keep up with the 4th quarter calendar given to you in class, as the end of the school term is quickly approaching for you seniors.

We will continue our study of Shakespeare's Hamlet this week by conpleting Acts III and IV. You should make sure you have completed study guides for each of these acts. Be prepared for a quiz on Act III and a quiz on Act IV.

12th Academic English
We will wrap up our study of the Romantic Period of British Literature by reading and discussing the poem, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." On Thursday, March 26th, you will have a test on the Romantic Period. This test will include all literature studied and all of the lecture notes given to you in class. On Friday, you will read and outline the introductory notes for the Victorian Period of British Literature.

OK Guys and Girls, this is the big test week. Make sure you review all of the strategies we learned to do well on the PSSA Reading Test. We will continue our work with Hamlet, reading aloud Act III and discussing the things that happen in that act. On Thursday you will take Vocabulary Quiz #13 and will complete List #14 and its review sheet. You will also turn in Newsweek Summary #14 at that time.

Your final copy of the Research Project will be due on Friday, March 20th. Make sure you edit your work and have it ready to turn in at that time. We will continue our work with the Romantic Age in Literature by studying the poems "Lines Composed A Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey" and "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." On Thursday you will take Vocabulary Quiz #13 and will complete List #14 and its review sheet. You will also turn in Newsweek Summary #14 at that time.

We will wrap up our PSSA Reading test preparations early this week by completing review work in the PSSA Reading Coach workbooks. We will continue our study of Shakespeare's Hamlet by reading Acts II and III together in class, and by completing a study guide for each act. You will have a quiz on both the Act II and Act III study guides.

12th Academic English
The research project is quickly coming to a close! Your text is due on Wednesday, March 11th and your final copy is due on Tuesday, March 17th. We will continue work with the novel Frankenstein early this week. Near the end of the week we will analyze several literary selections from the British Romantic Period, specifically, "The Oval Portrait" and "Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey."

On Friday, February 20th we will begin preparing for the PSSA Reading test by using Part One of the PSSA Reading Coach workbook.

It is here, guys and girls! PSSA Writing Tests begin Tuesday and will finish next Tuesday. Make sure you take your time, use your brains and demonstrate your proficient writing abilities. On Tuesday, we will begin work with Shakespeare's play Hamlet. We will see films on Shakespeare's life and on the influence Shakespeare has on our everyday lives. We will begin reading Act One of Hamlet and will answer study guide questions for that act.

12th Academic English
The first set of bibliography and note cards is due on Monday. We will continue our research work in the library this week. Remember that you should have a variety of sources for your research, not just internet sites but also books, magazines, reference works, etc. The second set of bibliography and note cards is due on Tuesday, February 17th.

We will continue to prepare for the PSSA Writing tests by reviewing the three types of writing you will be responsible for producing on the tests. We will also practice those writing types by completing writing prompts.

Your Thesis Statement card is due at the start of class on Monday! Vocabulary Quiz 10 will be given on Thursday, February 5th and Newsweek Summary 11 is also due at that time. We will continue work on the research project both in class and in the library. The first set of Bibliography and Note Cards is due on Monday, February 9th. Se Mr. Lucas if you have questions about completing this phase of the research project.

This week we will continue to prepare for the PSSA Writing Tests in February. Make sure you are taking good notes during class and are reviewing the Helpful Hints sections of your notes. We will start working with practice prompts near the middle of the week.

12th Academic English
We will continue working in the library on our research projects. The Specific Topic card is due on Thursday, January 29th, not Wednesday, as previously announced. Be sure to check in often with me on your progress. You should also start to develop your thesis statement and should get your interlibrary loan requests in to either Mr. Brand or Mrs. Miller as soon as possible.
