Week of December 10, 2018
11th Academic English
This week we will wrap up our "book work" on The Crucible.  On Monday, you will take the Act IV quiz and on Wednesday you will take a test on the entire play.  Monday and Tuesday you will have some class time to work on your project.  On Friday you will take vocabulary quiz #7, will turn in reading response #7 and will work with vocabulary list #8.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue our study of Shakespeare's MacBeth.  We will read Act II together and will work on Act III.  On Thursday you will take a quiz on Act II.  On Friday you will take vocabulary quiz #7, will turn in reading response #7 and will work on vocabulary list #8.

12th Honors English
You will continue to work on your research project this week.  You will turn in the next set of research documents this week and will continue work on the third set of research documents due next week.  Be prepared for vocabulary quiz #7 on Friday.

SAT Prep
Continue your work on the required chapters from the SAT Premier workbook.  Don't forget, if you receive a low grade on any of the chapter review documents, you can revisit that chapter to correct your mistakes.  Be sure to ask for help if you don't understand any information in the chapters.

Week of December 3, 2018
11th Academic English
This week our work with Arthur Miller's drama, The Crucible, will continue.  On Tuesday, you will take a quiz on Act III and will continue work on the Act IV study guide.  Later in the week we will make up the Acts I and II test, then will continue our study of Act IV.  Be prepared for a quiz on Act IV and a test on the entire play early next week.

12th Academic English
This week we will read together and discuss Act I of MacBeth.  You will have some class time to complete the Act I study guide.  On Thursday, you will take a quiz on Act I and will continue work with the Act II study guide.

12th Honors English
This week we will continue work on the research project.  You will finalize your thesis statement and turn in that information on Tuesday.  The first document packet will be due on Thursday.  Refer to the document format sheet you received in class last Friday to complete this work.  Deadlines are important during this project, so use your time wisely.

SAT Prep
The quarter is quickly passing by.  Make sure you are using your time wisely to complete all required chapters for this course.  Ask questions if you don't understand something.

11th Academic English
This week we will be busy.  You will work on a reading response that will be due on Friday, November 30th.  We will review vocabulary list #6 and will check vocabulary review sheet #6 in preparation for a quiz on Friday.  We will also read together and discuss Act III of The Crucible.  Your quiz on Act III will be moved to next week.

12th Academic English
This week you will work on reading response #6.  On Friday, you will take vocabulary quiz #6 and will begin work on list #7.  We will begin work with MacBeth this week by first reviewing information about the English Renaissance.  I will adjust due dates on the second quarter calendar later this week.

12th Honors English
We will begin the research unit this week.  You'll turn in your General Topic and Specific Topic this week.  On Friday, you will take vocabulary quiz #6.

SAT Prep
You will continue work in our SAT Premier workbook this week.  Make sure you are practicing the strategies discussed in each chapter, are asking questions and clarifying information as you go, and are keeping up with the work schedule.

On Monday we will review for the test on The Canterbury Tales.  On Tuesday you will take this test, then begin work on The English Renaissance.  On Wednesday we will continue discussing The English Renaissance

This week we will continue our study of Arthur Miller's drama, The Crucible.  On Tuesday and Wednesday, you will work on the Act III study guide.  On Thursday, you will take a test on the first two acts of this play.  Later in the week we will talk about Act III and will begin to discuss the research project related to The Crucible.  Remember, refer to your second quarter calendar often to keep up with work.

This week we will continue our work with "The Nun's Priest's Tale."  We will discuss the literary elements found in this work and also will discuss what societal values are reflected in this tale.  On Thursday, you will take vocabulary quiz #5, will turn in reading response #5 and will begin work on vocabulary list #6.

SAT Prep
This week we finish this course.  All of you should have developed skills and strategies that will help you when you take the SAT.  Make sure you review this information and use the practice tests both in the workbook and online when preparing for the SAT.

12th Academic English
This week you will finish your work with "The Prologue" from The Canterbury Tales.  Make sure you have detailed notes from this work.  Later in the week we will begin work with two of Chaucer's tales, "The Nun's Priest Tale" and "The Pardoner's Tale,"  Both of those tales are in the packet given to you on Friday.

This week we will discuss Act I of The Crucible.  Later in the week you will take the Act I quiz and will begin work on Act II of this drama.  What do you think the author is trying to tell us in this extended metaphor?

This week you should complete all required chapters assigned to you. When those are finished, you should work on the practice test.  Make sure you have completed all assigned work by October 29th.  As always, if you have questions talk with me.

This week we will begin a study of Renaissance England.  We will start the unit with an overview of life in England during this time period, then will begin work with Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales.  Make sure you are ready for the vocabulary quiz on Thursday.

This week we will begin our American literature studies.  We will start with an overview of Colonial America, then work with the drama The Crucible, a play about the Salem Witch Trials.  Study for the vocabulary quiz on Thursday.

12th Honors English
This week we begin our look at Renaissance England and its literature.  You will take notes during an introductory power point presentation, then will begin work on The Canterbury Tales.  Vocabulary Quiz #4 happens on Thursday.  Make sure you are prepared for this.

This week we will discuss the Anglo-Saxon poetry you've read and annotated in class.  Be prepared to discuss both the pagan belief in Fate and the Christian belief in Free Will found in each of these poems.  You will begin a writing project based on this poetry and will begin a study of Beowulf later in the week.

12th Honors English
This week we will discuss the Anglo-Saxon poetry you've read and annotated in class.  We will focus our discussion on the Anglo-Saxon cultural elements found through this poetry.  You will be given time to work on a writing project based on this poetry and will begin a study of the epic poem, Beowulf later in the week.

This week we will finish up both the SAT Reading Practice Test and the SAT Writing Practice Test that we started last week.  Both of these are graded assignments and are the final assignments in this course.  Remember to use your SAT Premier workbooks as review before you actually take the SAT.

We're wrapping up our literary studies this week by looking at several short stories from the Modern/Postmodern Period.  We'll take a look at "Old Man at the Bridge," p. 754, "The Leap," p. 795, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge," p. 829 and "The Jilting of Granny Weatherall," p. 843.  Start preparing for your final exam in this course!  I'll give you a rundown of what you'll need to review before the final.  Make sure you keep up with the work required of you!

12th Academic English
We're in the home stretch!  That diploma and the end of your high school career are only days away!  This week we'll use class time to prepare for your final exam.  Make sure you have gathered the materials you need to prepare for the final.  Refer to the final exam handout I gave you in class.  Your final exam is on Thursday, May 24th.  Make sure you prepare well for this final.

SAT Prep
This week we will complete the final tasks for this quarter course.  You'll have class time to complete both the Reading Practice Test and the Writing and Editing Practice Test found in the SAT Premier Workbook.  Use all the skills and strategies we practiced this quarter to complete these practice tests successfully.

This week you will finish up work on the Jazz Age project.  On Monday and Tuesday you will have time in the library to finish your writing for this project.  On Wednesday, you will turn in your writing and your four plot diagrams for the stories you read.  On Thursday you will have class time to work on the final reading response for this school year!  On Friday you will take vocabulary quiz #16, the final vocabulary quiz for this school year!

12th Academic English
On Monday and Tuesday we will review the literature from the British Modern/Postmodern periods in preparation for the unit test.  On Wednesday you will take the Modern/Postmodern unit test and will continue work on the Character Analysis writing, due on Monday, May 21st.  On Friday, you will take vocabulary quiz #16, the final vocabulary quiz for this school year!

You will be taking Keystone Exams this week, so our class will not be meeting.  Good luck on the Keystones!

This week you will continue work on the Jazz Age project.  Make sure you are reading the selections carefully and are completing the plot graphics correctly.  Talk with Mr. Lucas if you run into problems or are having difficulty with anything.  The completed project will be due sometime next week.  On Thursday you will have class time to work on reading response #16.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue our look at literature from the British Modern/Postmodern period.  We will discuss how the literature reflects the rapid changes happening in the society at this time.  When we finish this unit you will successfully complete a unit assessment and will begin a Character Analysis project.

SAT Prep
This week you will work on units 11 through 15 in the Editing and Revising workbook.  Later in the week we will work on Chapter 18 in the SAT Premier workbook.

Week of April 30, 2018
11th Academic English
This week we will finish viewing the film Of Mice and Men.  We will discuss similarities and differences you found between the novel we read in class and the film we viewed.  Later in the week we will begin a project focused on short stories written by F. Scott Fitzgerald.  His writings reflect American society during the 1920's, the Jazz Age.  I'll explain the project to you and distribute a collection of short stories by Fitzgerald, Jazz Age Stories, midweek.  On Thursday you will turn in reading response #15, will take vocabulary quiz #15 and will work on vocabulary list #16.  Make sure you have list #15 ready to review on Tuesday.

12th Academic English
This week we will finish our look at British Victorian literature.  You will take a unit test on this period either Tuesday or Wednesday.  We will begin a study of British literature from the Modern and Postmodern periods on Wednesday. On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #15 and will work on vocabulary list #16.

SAT Prep
On Monday we will check your work from chapter 15, then will begin work on chapter 16.  Later in the week we will begin work with chapter 17.  Make sure you map each of the reading sections you encounter in all of these chapters.  Mapping is probably the most important strategy used on the SAT Reading Exam!

11th Academic English
This week we will finish our work with Of Mice and Men.  Early in the week we will discuss the final three chapters of this work and will review your answers to the second study guide.  On Tuesday you will take a quiz on the second study guide.  On Wednesday you will take a test on the entire novel.  On Thursday you will work on reading response #15.  On Friday we will begin watching a film adaptation of this novel.

12th Academic English
This week we will begin work with British Victorian literature.  You will receive a packet of poetry and literary selections from Britain's Victorian age.  We will read together and discuss this information, looking for characteristics that identify these pieces as Victorian and discussing what societal changes happened as a result of the literature of the period.

SAT Prep
On Monday and Tuesday you will continue work on units 6 through 10 from the Editing and Revising workbook.  This is a graded assignment, so make sure you work carefully.  Wednesday through Friday we will work on Chapter 15 from the SAT Premier workbook.  Again, this is a graded assignment, so make sure you work carefully on the exercises associated with this chapter.

This week we will continue our look at Steinbeck's novel, Of Mice and Men.  We will discuss the first three chapters of this book and will review your study guide answer.  Midweek you will take a quiz on the first study guide.  You will begin work on the second study guide as you read chapters 4 through 6.  Later in the week you will have class time to work on reading response #14.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue our study of British Romantic Age literature.  We will discuss "Ode to a Nightingale," "Ode to the West Wind" and "from Frankenstein."  We will also begin work with "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," a handout you will receive in class.

SAT Prep
This week we will continue work with the Editing and Revising workbook.  You will complete work with units 1 through 5.  Together, we will discuss your answers for each unit. Later in the week we will begin work with chapter 13 in the SAT Premier Workbook.

11th Academic English
This week you took vocabulary quiz #13 and began work on vocabulary list #14 on Monday.  You turned in reading response #13 on Monday also.  These were the last two grades for the 3rd quarter.  Thankfully, we are moving into the fourth quarter on Thursday.  We will begin a new unit based on the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.  You will begin reading this novel and working on the first of two study guides on Wednesday.  This work will continue through the end of the week.

12th Academic English
This week you took vocabulary quiz #13 and began work on vocabulary list #14 on Monday.  Tuesday you read and annotated "Ode to a Nightingale" and "Ode to the West Wind."  Wednesday we will begin work with selections from Frankenstein and will continue that work into Thursday.  On Friday we will discuss these three pieces of literature and will begin work with "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner."  Fourth and, for you, last quarter begins on Thursday.  Make sure you wrap up your high school career strongly!

Monday you finished work with a practice SAT reading test.  Tuesday and Wednesday we discussed both the positives and negatives of this quarter course, how it helped you prepare for taking the SAT and what you took away from our studies.  Thursday a new group of students will begin this course.  We will discuss editing and revising techniques, then will complete units one through five in the Editing and Revising workbook.

This week we will continue viewing a film adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet.  Make sure you take good notes during the film so you can actively participate in class discussion.  We will check vocabulary list #13 this week in preparation for a quiz on Tuesday, April 3rd.

This week we will be looking at literary selections from the British Romantic Period.  Make sure you have good notes on each of the pieces we study in class along with good notes from the power point presentation on the Romantic Age.  We will check vocabulary list #13 this week in preparation for a quiz on Tuesday, April 3rd.

This week you will continue work on units 16 through 20 in the Editing and Revising workbook.  Later in the week we will look at an on-line summary of your performance on the PSAT you took last fall.  This will help you focus your preparations for the SAT exam

We are coming to the finish line with the research writing project.  You will use class time and home time to complete your position paper.  Details matter greatly, so make sure you are precisely following MLA format.  Frequently check the MLA Handbook.  Your completed work, including an updated works cited page, is due at the start of the class period on Thursday.  On Friday you will take vocabulary quiz #12 and will begin work with vocabulary list #13.

This week we will take a look at Chapters 23 through 25 in the Premier Workbook.  These chapters focus on grammar, revising and editing, so this information will not be new to you.  Later in the week you will work on units 16 through 20 in the Editing and Revising workbook.

11th Academic English
This week we will look at Act IV of Hamlet.  We will read and discuss scenes from Act IV, then you will take the Act IV quiz.  On Thursday, you will take vocabulary quiz #11, will turn in reading response #11 and will work on vocabulary list #12.  Keep up with all of your classwork!

12th Academic English
This week you begin to write your position paper.  Using the research documents you compiled, you will create a map/web then will come up with an outline of your paper.  You will decide what research sources you will cite in your writing, then will create a Works Cited page using MLA formatting.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #11 and will begin work on vocabulary list #12.

SAT Prep
Monday through Wednesday you will work with the Editing and Revising workbook, lessons 11-15.  On Thursday and Friday you will take sample test #1 in the SAT Premier workbook.  Both of these assignments are graded, so make sure you are using your skills to do your best work.

This week we will continue our look at Shakespeare's Hamlet.  On Monday we will finish our discussion of Act II and will begin discussion of Act III.  On Wednesday you will take the Act III quiz.  On Friday you will take a test on Acts I, II and III.  Make sure you keep up with your work.

This week you will continue to gather and process information for the research project.  The second set of documents is due on Tuesday at the start of class.  You will receive a copy of a sample research paper and I will review this with you.  This sample will help you understand what your final paper should look like.  Remember, document packet #3 is due on Monday, February 26th.

This week we will work on chapters 17 and 18 in your SAT Premier workbook.  Make sure you continue to practice the strategies learned in class for successful completion of the SAT Reading Test.

We're adjusting some due dates for the research packets.  Due to the snow days over the last two weeks, research document packet #2 is now due on Monday, 2/19.  Research document packet #3 is now due on Monday, 2/26.  Continue to use your library research time wisely to find and process sources for your research project.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #10.  You must show me your completed vocabulary list #10 to get the power point printout for this quiz.  Please make sure you keep up with all class work and home work.

SAT Prep
We are a little behind schedule due to the snow days of the last two weeks.  On Monday, we will finish our work on Chapter 15.  Tuesday and Wednesday we will work on Chapter 16.  On Thursday and Friday you will complete revising and editing work on units 6 through 10.  Next week we will use two days to take an SAT Practice Test.

Week of January 29, 2018
11th Academic English
This week we will continue our analysis of Shakespeare's play, The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.  On Monday we will wrap up our work with Act I.  On Tuesday you will take a quiz on Act I then will begin work on the Act II study guide.  On Thursday of this week you will turn in reading response #9, will take vocabulary quiz #9 and will work on vocabulary list #10.  On Friday we will discuss Act II of Hamlet.

12th Academic English
This week you will begin to gather and to process the research documents you'll need to complete your research project.  On Tuesday you will turn in your finalized Thesis Statement.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #9, will copy vocabulary list #10 and then will continue your work in the library.  Remember to plan your time accordingly so you are able to meet all deadlines for this project.

SAT Prep
On Monday through Wednesday we will work on chapter 14 in the SAT Premier Workbook.  On Thursday and Friday you will spend some time working in class on an SAT practice test.
