Week of December 15th
11th Academic English
We will continue to review Sentence Classification using worksheets created by me. On Thursday, December 18th, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #8 and will turn in Newsweek Summary #8. Friday, December 19th, Guidance will use our class time to review your ASVAB scores.

12th Academic English
We will finish our study of Shakespeare's MacBeth this week. Tuesday, December 16th, you will turn in your essay on the Third Murderer and will take a quiz on Act IV. Wednesday, December 17th you will take the quiz on Act V. On Thursday, December 18th, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #8 and turn in Newsweek Summary #8. Friday we will complete our unit on MacBeth by taking the final test on this play.

Week of December 8th
11th Academic English
This week we will continue our work with the novel O Pioneers! On Monday, 12/8, you will take a quiz on Part Three and continue work on the Part Four Study Guide. On Friday, you will take a test on Parts One, Two and Three. We will also continue our study of Sentence Classification by completing worksheets and checking those worksheet answers in class. On Wednesday and into Thursday, you will take the next round of the school mandated 4-Sight Tests.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue our study of Shakespeare's MacBeth. You will complete the Act III Study Guide and we will read and discuss Act III together. On Wednesday, you will take a quiz on Act III and on Thursday, you will take a test covering Acts I, II and III of MacBeth. Thursday and Friday of this week you will work on Act IV of MacBeth and will complete the Act IV Study Guide.

Week of December 1st
11th Academic English
Enjoy your day off from school on Monday! This week we will begin working with Clauses (p. 436+ in your textbook) and will use that knowledge to classify sentences. Be sure to take good notes from the lecture and to use those notes on both the worksheets and the book exercises. Be prepared for Vocabulary Quiz #7 on Thursday, December 4th. Your Newsweek summary #7 is also due on Thursday, 12/4. We will end the week with a quiz on part 3 of O Pioneers! on Friday, December 5th.

12th Academic English
Enjoy your day off from school on Monday! We will continue our work with MacBeth this week. 11th Academic English
We will take a quiz on Part 2 of O Pioneers! on Tuesday, November 25th. Work on the Part 3 Study Guide given to you in class. We will begin practice for the PSSA Tests by working with a Revising and Editing workbook on Tuesday and Wednesday in class. Have a great Thanksgiving Vacation!

12th Academic English
We will read together and discuss Act I of MacBeth, then take a quiz on that Act on Tuesday, November 25th. You will read Act II of MacBeth and complete the Study Guide for Act II. Have a great Thanksgiving Vacation!

Week of November 17th
11th Academic English
We will continue to work on Sentence Analysis this week, finishing up with a test on Sentence Analysis on Friday, November 21st. You will have a Newsweek Summary due on Thursday, November 20th, and will take Vocabulary Quiz #6 on Thursday, November 20th as well.

12th Academic English
We will begin studying Shakespeare's play MacBeth. You will receive a copy of the play and a study guide for Act I of the play. On Thursday, November 20th, you will turn in a Newsweek Summary and will take Vocabulary Quiz #6. Tuesday of this week, our Guidance Department will meet with all of our senior English classes in the Library during your regularly scheduled English class.

Week of November 10th
11th Academic English
We will begin analyzing sentences using the notation I will teach you in class. Please make sure you are using this notation on all book exercises and on the worksheets. Don't forget that Newsweek Summary 5 is due on Thursday at the start of the class period.

12th Academic English
We will continue to analyze and interpret Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales by working with "The Nun's Priest Tale" and "The Pardoner's Tale" (pp.119-150) Be sure to take good notes. Be prepared for a test on The Canterbury Tales and all related notes near the end of this week. Don't forget that Newsweek Summary 5 is due on Tuesday at the start of the class period.

Week of November 3rd
11th Academic English
This week we will continue working on Part 1 of the novel O Pioneers! You should finish reading Part 1 and answering the questions on the Part 1 Study Guide for this novel. We will also begin a grammar review by working with the Parts of Speech, beginning on pg. 379 in the grammar text book. Vocabulary Quiz #5 will happen on Thursday, November 6th and Newsweek Summary 4 is due at that time.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue or work with The Canterbury Tales by reading, outlining and discussing the "Prologue" (p. 94-115) of this work. Make sure you are taking good notes on this! Vocabulary Quiz #5 will happen on Thursday, November 6th.

Week of October 27th
11th Academic English We will watch the film The Crucible and note the similarities and differences between the film and the version of the play we studied in class. Later in the week we will work on Newsweek summaries, then begin reading the novel O Pioneers!

12th Academic English We will finish viewing the film Becket and will begin working on the essay test. Make sure you finish the essay test by the due date given to your section. (There are different due dates for each section of this class.) Later in the week we will begin studying The Canterbury Tales. To prepare for this, we will read, outline and discuss pp. 90-93 "Prepare To Read" and the English Medieval Period.

Week of October 20th
11th Academic English
We will finish our study of The Crucible by completing the Act IV Study Guide and by discussing the play in class. Prepare for Vocabulary Quiz #4 scheduled for Thursday, October 23rd. The final test on The Crucible will be given on Friday, October 24th.

12th Academic English
We will continue viewing the film Becket, using it to understand both the changing concept of hero in Western culture and the reason medieval Europeans made pilgrimages to Canterbury Cathedral. Prepare for Vocabulary Quiz #4, rescheduled for Friday, October 24th due to PSSA retesting.

Week of October 13th
11th Academic English
Enjoy your day off on Monday! On Tuesday, you must turn in your Newsweek Summary at the start of class. The Newsweek magazine you used should also be turned in at that time. Tuesday and Wednesday, we will discuss Act II of The Crucible and will take a quiz on the Act II Study Guide. On Thursday, October 16th, we will take a test on Acts I and II of The Crucible. We will begin work on Act III after the test on Thursday, continuing into Friday.

12th Academic English
Enjoy your day off on Monday! On Tuesday, we will discuss Morte d'Arthur (p.176) and will prepare for a test on Beowulf and Arthurian Literature. That test will happen on Wednesday, October 15th. After the test, and continuing through the rest of the week, we will begin watching the film Becket. You must take careful notes on this film, as you will be required to complete an essay test on the changing concept of hero as seen through all of the information presented to you since the start of the school year.

Week of October 6th
11th Academic English
Vocabulary Quiz #3 will be given on Thursday, October 9th. We will continue our study of The Crucible by reading Acts I and II, and by completing the study guides for each of those acts. A quiz on will be given upon the completion of each act. You will receive Vocabulary List #4 and its review sheet on Thursday after Vocabulary Quiz #3. You will also work on another Newsweek Summary, due next week.

12th Academic English
Vocabulary Quiz #3 will be given on Thursday, October 9th. We will continue our study of Arthurian Literature by reading and discussing both "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" (p.162) and "Morte d'Arthur" (p.176). Not only will we analyze the structure of the literature itself, but we will also look at the heroic qualities of King Arthur and the similarities/differences between Arthur and Beowulf. You will receive Vocabulary List #4 and its review sheet on Thursday after Vocabulary Quiz #3. You will also work on another Newsweek Summary, due at the end of the week.

Week of September 29th
11th Academic English
Your Newsweek summaries will be due on Tuesday, September 30th at the beginning of the class period. You will view and take notes on two films this week, Good Night and Good Luck, and The Salem Witch Trials. We will discuss the impact that Senator Joseph McCarthy's senate investigations on "unAmerican activities" had on our country and its implications in the development of the play The Crucible. We will begin reading the play and not only will you take notes on the play, but also you will complete the Act One Study Guide that accompanies this work. Don't forget to participate in the Homecoming Spirit Week activities!

12th Academic English
Your Beowulf projects are due on Tuesday, September 30th at the beginning of the class period. You will view and take notes on two films this week, The Legend of King Arthur, and In Search of Camelot. We will discuss Arthurian legend, then you will read and take notes on "Prepare to Read," p. 160 and "Sir Gawain and The Green Knight," p. 162. Don't forget to participate in the Homecoming Spirit Week activities!

11th Academic English
Prepare for Vocabulary Quiz #2 on Thursday, September 25th. You will receive vocabulary list #3 and the review sheet at that time. We will review both "The General History of Virginia" (p. 72) and "On Plymouth Plantation" (p. 78) this week. Be prepared for a short quiz on each selection after we have discussed each in class. The test on all of the Early American Colony information, including the two reading selections, will be on Monday, September 29th.

12th Academic English
The test on Beowulf was moved to Monday, September 22nd due to the power failure last week. Prepare for Vocabulary Quiz #2 on Thursday, September 25th. You will receive vocabulary list #3 and the review sheet at that time. Begin work on the Beowulf project. Both parts of the project will be due on Tuesday, September 30th.

Prepare to present your Early American Colonies group project on either Tuesday or Wednesday of this week. 4-Sight Testing will be conducted in class on Thursday, September 18th and will continue into part of Friday. We will begin "Prepare to Read/The General History of Virginia" (p.70) on Friday, September 19th. Have with you your literature text.

12th Academic English
Continue to read and analyze the epic poem Beowulf (pp.46-60). Prepare for a test on Beowulf and the related lecture notes on Friday, September 19th.

11th Academic English
Continue to work on the Early Colonial America Project, preparing for your group power point presentation on Monday, September 15th. Vocabulary Quiz #1 will be given on Thursday, September 11th and you will receive Vocabulary List #2 and its review sheet at that time.

12th Academic English
Complete an in-class writing assignment on Monday. The assignment asks you to reflect on a time when you were exiled, either figuratively or literally, and write about that experience. On Tuesday, September 9th, you will take a test on the Anglo/Saxon Period. The test includes all information from the introductory notes, class lecture, literary terms and poetry analysis. On Wednesday, we will begin studying the epic poem Beowulf and continue that study into next week. Vocabulary Quiz #1 will be given on Thursday, September 11th and you will receive Vocabulary List #2 and its review sheet at that time.

Research the specific areas given to you for the Early America Group Project. Use the Internet and any other research sources to compile the information you will need for your presentation. Project presentations will begin on Monday, September 15th.

12th Academic English
Read and outline "The Seafarer" (p.17), "The Wanderer" (p.21) and "The Wife's Lament" (p.25). Be sure to focus not only on the content of the poems but also on the elements of Anglo-Saxon literature found in these selections.
