Week of May 3, 2010
11th Academic English
This week we will continue our studies of John Steinbeck's novel, Of Mice and Men. You will take a quiz on chapters 1 through 3 on Monday, May 3rd. On Wednesday, May 5th, you will take the second quiz (chapters 4-6) for this novel. On Thursday, May 6th, you will take the final test on this novel and will begin your studies of Modern and Postmodern American Literature by reading and outlining the short story "Winter Dreams" by F. Scott Fitzgerald, pp. 742-762.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue our studies of Modern and Postmodern British Literature by analyzing the short stories "The First Year of My Life," p. 1164 and "The Rocking Horse Winner," p. 1176. You will also outline the biographical information on Muriel Spark, p.1156 and D.H.Lawrence and Grahan Greene, p. 1174. On Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #16 and turn in the next Newsweek summary.

Week of April 19, 2010

Academic English 12

Students will begin independently reading pieces of the Modern/Postmodern Era of Literature. Students will be responsible to read and take notes on Elizabeth Bowen's The Demon Lover and Alan Sillitoe's The Fiddle. Study guides for the analysis of each work, as well as historical relevance will be distributed and must be completed.

Academic English 11

Throughout the entire week, students will view Franco Zepherelli's film adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet. Students will take notes comparing and contrasting the film and the text.

Week of April 12, 2010

Academic English 12

Students will review for the Victorian Era quiz that will be given on Tuesday April 13. Students will be responsible for the independent reading of the introduction to the Modern and Postmodern periods of literature. Newsweek summary/reflections will be due on Friday April 16 on the same days as the Vocabulary 14 Quiz.

Academic English 11

Students will continue in-class reviews for the PSSA writing exam. Students will focus on prewriting, particularly outlining, developing a thesis statement, before finally drafting a response. Newsweek summary/reflections will be due on Friday April 16 on the same days as the Vocabulary 14 Quiz.

Week of April 5, 2010

Academic English 12

Students will be required to read the specific poems by Robert Browning (My Last Duchess, Life in a Love, Love Among the Ruins) and Emily Barrett Browning (Sonnet 43) and complete the packet of questions for discussion on Wednesday April 7. Students are responsible to have any notes on historical aspects of the Victorian Era of Literature as well as on analytical interpretations of the corresponding works. Students will be required to read whatever elements of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre that are not covered in class.

Academic English 11

Students will be responsible for constructing a 6-sentence paragraph that is well-balanced and repeats no words. Students will also need to write a brief reflection based on the in-class activity on Wednesday April 7. Students will continue in class activities i preparation for the PSSAs.
