Week of December 21, 2015
11th Academic English
On Monday you will take a test on Acts I and II of The Crucible.  Make sure you prepare for this major grade!!!  After the test you should work on the Act III and Act IV study guides.  When we return from our Christmas vacation we will wrap up our study of this play and will prepare for midterm exams.  Have a safe and happy holiday vacation!!!

12th Academic English
On Monday you will take a test on Acts I, II and III of MacBeth.  Make sure you prepare for this major second quarter grade!!  After the test you should work on the Act IV and Act V study guides for this play.  When we return from our Christmas vacation we will wrap up our study of this work by Shakespeare and will prepare for midterm exams.  Have a safe and happy holiday vacation!!!

Theatre Production.
On Tuesday you will present your make-up design project.  This is a major grade for this quarter, so make sure you put time and effort into this work.  When we return from our Christmas vacation you will have about two weeks to complete your midterm exam project.  You will receive the details on this project on the first day back after vacation.  Have a safe and happy holiday vacation!!!

11th Academic English
This week we will continue our study of The Crucible.  On Monday we will finish Act One and begin Act Two.  On Tuesday you will take a quiz on Act One.  We will read and discuss Act Two throughout most of the week.  When we finish you will take a quiz on Act Two and will begin work on the Act Three Study Guide.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #7, will turn in reading response #7 and will work on vocabulary list #8.  On Monday of next week you will take a test on Acts One and Two of The Crucible.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue our study of Shakespeare's MacBeth.  On Monday you will take a quiz on Act Two.  We will read together and discuss Act Three.  When we finish you will take a quiz on Act Three and will take a test on Acts One through Three.  After the test, you will begin work on the Act Four study guide.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #7, will turn in reading response #7 and will work on vocabulary list #8.

Theatre Production
This week we will finish viewing Into The Woods.  You will create a make-up plan for a character assigned to you, then will begin work on the midterm project.

This week we will continue our study of The Crucible.  We will read together and discuss Act I and Act II.  You should continue to work on the Act I study guide and the Act II study guide, which you will receive later this week.  On Wednesday, you will take a quiz on Act I of this play.  Make sure you are keeping up with your class work and home work since the second quarter will quickly come to an end after our Christmas break!

This week we will continue our study of MacBeth.  We will finish our discussion of Act I on Monday and you will begin work on Act II at that time.  On Tuesday you will take the Act I quiz and we will begin to read together and discuss Act II.  Later in the week you will take the Act II quiz and will begin work on Act III.  Keep up with your reading as we plan to finish this play before we leave for the Christmas break.

This week we will watch Into The Woods in preparation for your next project -- stage make-up.

On Tuesday we will meet with a representative of PHEAA to learn about a program called Junior Jumpstart.  Wednesday and Thursday we will begin work with The Crucible.  We will view and take notes while watching a documentary about the Salem Witch Trials, then will begin reviewing introductory information about this social drama.  Finally, we will begin working with Act I.  On Friday you will take vocabulary quiz #6, will turn in reading response #6 and will begin work on vocabulary list #7.

12th Academic English
On Tuesday we will begin to read together and discuss Act I of MacBeth.  While we read together make sure that you understand the content of this play and that you complete the Act I study guide.  On Friday you will take vocabulary quiz #6, will turn in reading response #6 and will begin work on vocabulary list #7.

Theatre Production
You will continue work on your set design project.  Work needs to be completed as soon as possible for this project, so make sure you use time wisely.

On Monday we will review for a test on the literature we've studied so far this quarter.  You will be tested on the unit introductory notes, Native American literature, explorers'/settlers' narrative accounts and on the literary devices that accompany these stories.  The test will be on Tuesday, so make sure you have everything straight in your heads!!  Enjoy our indoor field day on Wednesday and be sure to thank Mrs. Minalda and her helpers for setting it up!!

On Monday we will review your understanding of The English Renaissance, then will begin work with Shakespeare's tragedy, MacBeth.  Tuesday you will continue working on Act I of this play.  Enjoy our indoor field day on Wednesday and be sure to thank Mrs. Minalda and her helpers for setting it up!!

This week we will begin a look at explorer/settler writings from our earliest American literature.  We will read together and discuss selections from "Journal of the First Voyage to America," pp. 60-64, "The General History of Virginia," pp. 70-74, and "Of Plymouth Plantation," pp. 78-84. On Friday you will turn in your completed Creation Story based on the Native American works we studied last week.  Be prepared for a test on the Native/Early American information on Monday, November 23rd.

12th Academic English
This week we will wrap up our study of selections from The Canterbury Tales.  On Monday and Tuesday we will discuss both "The Nun's Priest Tale," pp. 118-137, and "The Pardoner's Tale," pp. 140-150.  You will work on an If-Then worksheet based on The Canterbury Tales to help prepare you for the mid-term exam.  On Friday you will take a test on The Canterbury Tales.  Make sure you are ready for this test.

Theatre Production
After a week that didn't go quite as planned, you will finally begin working together on the Set Design Project.  On Monday, you will get details about this project and what you are expected to complete, then will have the rest of the week to work on this project.  Make sure you work together as a team to create the best set design you are capable of producing.

This week we will continue our look at early Native American literature.  We will discuss the three short stories you've read from the literature anthology then will work on a writing assignment that will ask you to compose your own origin myth in the style of the Native Americans.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #5, will turn in reading response #5 and will work on vocabulary unit #6.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue our work with The Canterbury Tales.  We will finish reading together and discussing "The Nun's Priest Tale" and will read together and discuss "The Pardoner's Tale." Make sure you take good notes during our discussions.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #5, will turn in reading response #5 and will work on vocabulary unit #6.  Be prepared for the test on The Canterbury Tales being given sometime early next week.

Theatre Production
On Tuesday you will read an article of your choice about current events on Broadway.  Wednesday you will begin plans for your set design project.  You will be given a scene from a show and will be required to design a three dimensional model set for that production.  More instructions will be given during our class time.

11th Academic English
On Monday you will take another test on Sentence Classification.  Make sure you study!!!! On Tuesday and through the rest of the week we will begin a look at the earliest American literature, Native American Origin Legends.  You will outline some introductory notes on pages 1-12 in the literature anthology, then we will read together and discuss "The Earth on Turtle's Back," "When Grizzlies Walked Upright," and "Navajo Origin Legend," pp. 16-23.  Near the end of the week you will begin work on a writing assignment related to these stories.

12th Academic English
On Monday and into the middle of the week you will have class time to work on "The Prologue" from The Canterbury Tales.  Later in the week we will begin to read together and discuss "The Nun's Priest Tale," pp. 118-137.  Make sure you are taking exemplary notes on all of this information.

Theatre Production
On Monday we will begin our next unit, Set Design, by watching a stage version of Peter Pan.  You should take specific note of how the set is used to further tell the story in this Broadway adaptation of this classic.  When we finish viewing this show you will begin to construct a three dimensional model of a set.

On Monday and Thursday of this week we will participate in a study of the College Board's ACT Writing Test.  Tuesday and Wednesday we will review Sentence Classification for another test on this material.  (You will take that test on Monday, November 2nd.) On Friday you will take vocabulary quiz #4, will turn in reading response #4 and will work on vocabulary list #5.  Make sure you prepare well for the vocabulary quiz, the reading response and the second Sentence Classification test, as these will be the final grades for the 1st quarter.

12th Academic English
On Monday and Thursday of this week we will participate in a study of the College Board's ACT Writing Test.  Tuesday and Wednesday we will be working with "The Prologue" from The Canterbury Tales.  On Friday you will take vocabulary quiz #4, will turn in reading response #4 and will work on vocabulary list #5.  Make sure you are well-prepared for the vocabulary quiz and the reading response as these will be the final grades for the 1st quarter.

On Monday through Wednesday you will work on the Blocking Project.  Details of the project requirements will be discussed in class on Monday.  You will turn in your project later this week.  After the Blocking Project is complete we will view a stage production of Peter Pan in preparation for your next project -- Scenic Design.

On Monday you will take vocabulary quiz #3 and will work on vocabulary list #4.  Tuesday we will finish checking worksheet answers and will review for a test on Sentence Classification.  You will take that test on Wednesday, then will continue work with the Editing and Revising workbooks.  On Thursday we will work together with the Editing and Revising workbooks in preparation for an Editing and Revising quiz on Friday.

12th Academic English
Monday and Tuesday we will continue our analysis of Arthurian literature.  We will finish discussing "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" and will read together and discuss the selection from Morte d'Arthur.  On Wednesday you will take a test on this information, then begin work with The Canterbury Tales.  Thursday and Friday you will work with "The Prologue" from The Canterbury Tales.

Theatre Production
On Monday we will discuss what blocking techniques you observed while watching Auntie Mame.  You will then begin work on a blocking project that will be due later in the week.  On Friday you will take a quiz on blocking/unit 5 in our workbooks.

On Tuesday and Wednesday we will continue classifying sentences according to structure.  On Thursday and Friday we will be taking CDT Writing Tests during our class period.  Be prepared for Vocabulary Quiz #3 on Monday, October 19th.  Reading Response #3 is still due at the start of class on Thursday.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue our study of Arthurian literature.  On Tuesday we will begin reading and discussing "Sir Gawain and The Green Knight."  When we finish that we will look at a selection from Morte d'Arthur.  On Friday you will take vocabulary quiz #3, will turn in reading response #3 and will begin work on vocabulary list #4.  Be prepared for a test on Arthurian literature when we finish this unit.

Theatre Production
This week we will look at the three types of staging and how blocking scenes changes for each.  To prepare for this project we will view the play Auntie Mame.  Make sure you think about how you would change scene blocking to meet the requirements for the three types of staging while you watch this play.

11th Academic English
This week we will continue identifying clauses in sentences.  We will use this skill to classify sentences according to structure.  Later in the week or early next week you will take a test on Sentence Classification.  Make sure you prepare for this assessment.

12th Academic English
This week we will begin a study of Arthurian literature.  You will view two documentaries, one on King Arthur and another on his kingdom, Camelot.  When we finish viewing these works, you will read and outline introductory notes on page 161 of the literature anthology.  We will read together and discuss "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," p. 162+, and a selection from "Morte d'Arthur," p. 176+.  Don't forget that the new due date for your Beowulf Project is Thursday, October 8th.  Make sure you are ready to hand in your project at the start of class on Thursday.  No late projects will be accepted.

Theatre Production
This week you will finish work on your costume project.  Expect to present your work either Wednesday or Thursday.  We will look at theatre articles via the Internet and you will write a response to one of those articles you select.  The response will be due on Tuesday, October 13th.  Later in the week we will begin viewing Auntie Mame in preparation for work on a blocking project.

This week we will continue working with Clauses.  You will practice Sentence Classification by identifying independent and subordinate clauses in sentences, then use those to classify the sentences as either simple, compound, complex or compound/complex.  On Thursday you will take Vocabulary Quiz #2, will turn in Reading Response #2 and will work on list #3.  Enjoy Homecoming Spirit Week 2015!!

On Tuesday you will take a test on Sentence Analysis.  Make sure you study your notes and worksheets to prepare for this test.  After the test we will begin work with Clauses and Sentence Classification.  Near the end of the week we'll put these grammar reviews into use by practicing editing and revising skills.

12th Academic English
This week we'll continue our look at the Anglo-Saxon epic poem Beowulf.  We'll continue our class discussions of this work, learning about Anglo-Saxon cultural values and traditions.  At the end of the week you will take a test on Beowulf then begin work on a project centered on this literary piece.

Theatre Production
This week we'll continue to look at costuming and how it helps to tell the story in musical theatre.  You'll continue to watch the film version of the musical My Fair Lady, noting how costumes are used to define the social classes of the characters, and how costumes are used to non-verbally depict Eliza's transformation from flower girl to royalty.

This week you will continue to work on the Exile writing prompt.  Your completed essay is due on Friday, September 18th.  On Tuesday you will take a test on the Anglo/Saxon Period, then will begin work on Beowulf.  On Thursday you will take Vocabulary Quiz #1, will turn in Reading Response #1 and will work on Vocabulary List #2.

Theatre Production I
This week you'll continue work on the Theatre Jobs project.  By Friday be ready to turn in your written report and to present your findings in class.  Make sure you ask questions if you are having problems with the project.

This week we will begin work with sentence analysis.  Using the procedures shown to you in class, you will analyze sentences from both teacher worksheets and text exercises.  Early next week we will check Vocabulary List #1 and its review sheet, so please make sure you have those completed.

12th Academic English
This week we will look at Anglo-Saxon exile poetry.  We will read and discuss three selections in class, noting how the poems reveal elements of Anglo-Saxon culture and mores as well as how the poems employ several literary devices.  Later this week you will begin work on a writing prompt based on this poetry.  Early next week we will check Vocabulary List #1 and its review sheet, so please make sure you have those completed.

Theatre Production I
This week we will continue our look at the history of American Musical Theatre and Broadway.  We'll view the third installment of "Broadway: The American Musical".  You will also begin working on the first project for this course by researching theatre jobs.

This week we will continue or study of John Steinbeck's classic, Of Mice and Men.  You will take a quiz on the first study guide you were given and will begin work on the second study guide for this novel.  We'll discuss how life in America was reflected in this novel.  On Thursday you will take the final vocabulary quiz of the year, vocabulary quiz #16, and will turn in reading response #15.  Things are starting to wrap up for the school year, so make sure you keep up with the work!!  Soon you'll be SENIORS!

This week we will finish up our literary studies by reading and discussing together three short stories--"The First Year of My Life" (pp. 1164-70), "The Rocking Horse Winner" (pp. 1174-89), and "A Shocking Accident" (pp. 1190-94).  On Thursday you will take the last vocabulary quiz of the year, vocabulary quiz #16.  On Friday you will take a test on the Modern/Postmodern Periods in British literature, then will begin the review for Final Exams.  Finals begin next week, so make sure you keep up with everything that needs to get done before you take your exams.  Graduation is just around the corner!!!!

This week we will finish up our look at short stories from the American Modern/Postmodern Periods.  On Tuesday you will take a unit test, then begin work with Steinbeck's classic novel, Of Mice and Men.  We will continue our work on this novel through the next two weeks.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #15, will turn in reading response #14, and will work on vocabulary list #16.  The end of the school year is fast approaching, so make sure you keep up with your work!

This week we will continue our look at British literature from the Modern/Postmodern Periods.  On Monday we will discuss "The Lady In The Looking Glass; A Reflection," pp. 1156-1163.  Tuesday we will read together and discuss "The Frist year of My Life," pp. 1164-1170.  Your Character Analysis Project is due on Wednesday at the start of class.  Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #15 and will work on vocabulary list #16.  On Friday we will begin work with "The Rocking Horse Winner," pp. 1174-1189.  Senior Final Exams are right around the corner, so make sure you keep up with your work during these last two weeks of class.  Graduation is almost here!!!

This week you will take a quiz on "In Another Country" on Monday.  We will discuss both "The Turtle," pp. 766-70, and "The Night The Ghost Got In," pp. 896-902.  You will take a quiz on both once we complete our discussions.  Later in the week we will look at some information on the beginnings of the Postmodern Movement, then will work with the short story "The Brown Chest," pp. 1000-08.

This week we will continue our look at British literature from the Modern and Postmodern periods.  You will read and outline "The Demon Lover," pp. 1030-38 and "The Fiddle," pp. 1076-84.  We will discuss both short stories and how they reflect life in Britain during this period.  Later in the week we'll read together and discuss "The Lady In The Looking Glass; A Reflection," pp. 1156-63, and discuss stream of consciousness writing.  Don't forget that your character analysis project is due next week, Wednesday, May 6th.

On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #14, will turn in reading response #13, and will work with vocabulary list #15.  On Friday we will discuss Steinbeck's "The Turtle."  Be sure to keep up with your work as the end of the school year will approach very quickly!!

On Monday you will take a test on The Victorian Age.  Make sure you are ready to do well with this test.  We will begin and analysis of British literature from the Modern and Postmodern periods after you finish the test.  You will read and outline pp. 950-960 in the literature anthology, then take some notes from the biographical information on Elizabeth Bowen found on p. 1030.  You'll also take some notes on the literary terms and devices found on p. 1031.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #14 and will work on vocabulary list #15.  Be sure to continue work with your Character Analysis project, due on Wednesday, May 6th.  The final exam for this course will quickly approach, so make sure you are keeping up with all of the work assigned to you!!

This week we will continue our study of American literature from the Modern Period.  You will complete work on the Jazz Age Project, then will begin to look at literature from different American authors who wrote during the Modern Period.  We will discuss the impact of American and world events on the literature of this time.  Be prepared for a short quiz after work is completed on each literature selection.

12th Academic English
This week we will continue our look at literature from Britain's Victorian Age.  We will look at various selections of literature from this period, discuss the impact societal events had on the literature, and look at examples of literary terms and devices found in the literature.  At the end of the unit we will take a test.  Make sure you continue work on the Character Analysis Project, due in May.

This week we will continue work on The Jazz Age project.  You will continue to develop detailed plot summary graphic organizers for the Fitzgerald short stories you choose for your work.  Remember as you read to keep in mind the essay options you were given.  On Thursday you will take vocabulary quiz #13 and will begin work on vocabulary list #14.  Don't forget that reading response #12 is also due on Thursday.  Make sure you come out to the NS Theatre Arts production of Crazy For You this weekend.  It's a great show!!

On Monday we will finish our study of Hamlet.  After viewing the film, we will discuss the similarities and differences found in the film and in the version of the play we studied in class.  On Tuesday we will begin a unit on America's Modern/Postmodern Periods.  You will take notes during a power point discussion, then will begin work on the Jazz Age Project.  Work on this project will continue though the end of the week.

This week we will continue our study of Britain's Romantic Period.  We will discuss the three literary selection you read last week, then will begin reading and discussing, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," pp. 685-709.  Please make sure you note first, the impact of Britain's Industrial Revolution on the literature of the period, then the role of Nature in the literary selections.

This week we will complete our study of Shakespeare's Hamlet.  On Monday we will read together and discuss Act V.  On Tuesday you will take a quiz on Act V and prepare for the final test on Hamlet, being given on Wednesday.  We will also begin viewing a film version of this play.  While watching the film, take note of the similarities and differences between the film and the version of the play we studied in class.  Be prepared for a discussion at the end of the film.

This is it, guys and girls, the end of the position paper research project!!!  On Tuesday you will turn in two copies of your completed research project.  Make sure you follow, exactly, all MLA guidelines for research papers. No late papers will be accepted, so make sure you are prepared to meet this deadline. On Wednesday we will begin a study of British Romantic Period literature.  Have with you your literature anthology and your notebook.

Week of March 9, 2015
11th Academic English
This week we will continue our study of Shakespeare's Hamlet.  On Monday you will take the Acts I, II and III Test originally scheduled for last Wednesday, then will finish reading Act IV and will complete the Act IV study guide.  We will read together and discuss Act IV, but I want you to think about how Prince Hamlet and Laertes may be in the same situation. Be ready to discuss this in class.  On Wednesday, you will take vocabulary quiz #11 and will turn in reading response #10, if you haven't done so already.  When we finish working with Act IV later this week, you will take a quiz.  Spring is almost here!!!

12th Academic English
We are coming down to the wire on the Research Project!!  On Monday you will turn in the outline that was originally due last Wednesday.  On Wednesday you will take vocabulary quiz #11.  The remainder of class time this week will be devoted to finishing your works cited page, due on Thursday of this week, and finishing the final draft of your research project, due on Tuesday, March 17th.  Hang in there--the project is almost finished!!

Week of February 23, 2015

11th Academic English
This week we will continue our study of Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet.  On Monday you will take the Act II Quiz.  During the week we will read together and discuss Act III, then you will take the Act III quiz.  We will schedule a test on Acts I, II and III when we finish working with Act III.

12th Academic English
This week you will finish gathering and processing research for the position paper project.  Your third packet of research documents will be due on Thursday of this week...note the due date change for that packet!!  Once you turn in the third packet, you will begin to gather your ideas and determine how you will present your research to prove your thesis.  You will use pre-writing skills like mapping and outlining to create a plan for your work.  A Harvard-style topic outline will be due next week.

Enjoy your Presidents' Day holiday!  This week we will continue our study of Shakespeare's Hamlet.  We will finish reading together and discussing Act II, then you will take a quiz on this act.  On Wednesday you will take vocabulary quiz #10 and will turn in reading response #9.  Continue working on the Act III study guide.

12th Academic English
Enjoy the Presidents' Day holiday!  This week you will continue your work with the research project.  The second set of research documents is due on Wednesday at the start of class.  Remember, even if weather causes problems with our school day schedule, this does not change the due date for this packet.  On Wednesday you will take vocabulary quiz #10, then will continue work on the last packet of research documents, due Wednesday, February 25th.  Be sure to talk with me should you have questions or run into problems.

This week you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #9 on Wednesday.  Work on the Act II study guide for Hamlet.  On Friday you'll take a quiz on Act I of Hamlet.

12th Academic English
Revised due dates for the research project will be given to you on Tuesday.  On Thursday you'll take Vocabulary Quiz #9.  Make sure you are using time wisely to meet all of the deadlines for this project.  If you run into trouble speak with Mr. Lucas as soon as possible!
