On Monday you'll enjoy the Presidents' Day holiday. On Tuesday, we'll take a look at Act IV information from Hamlet, and will discuss major events in the play up to this point. Be ready for a discussion! Wednesday you'll take the Act IV quiz and will begin work on Act V and its study guide. We're closing in on wrapping up this Shakespearean tragedy!

On Monday you'll enjoy the Presidents' Day holiday. On Tuesday, you will hand in the last set of Bibliography and Note Cards, then will begin working on an outline for your research project. You'll spend this week developing an outline, creating the works cited page and beginning your text writing. All of the research you've done over the last four weeks will be used to create the final product---your position paper. Make sure you keep focused on the final product and don't slack off. You must make all of the remaining due dates for the project, and you must have all components of this project completed before you can hand in your finished work. Those of you who missed the Vocabulary Quiz on Thursday of last week will make that up on Tuesday of this week

This week we'll continue our work with Shakespeare's Hamlet. Monday and Tuesday we'll talk about Act I and review your answers to the Act I study guide. On Tuesday you'll take the Act I quiz and begin work on the Act II study guide. Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #10 and turn in Newsweek summary #6. You'll also work on Vocabulary List #11. On Monday you will turn in your Thesis Statement for the position paper research project. Make sure you follow correct procedure in creating the Thesis Statement. Also on Monday we will review procedures for creating the Note and Bibliography Cards. The first set of those is due on Monday, February 6th. We'll also review some on-line research sources and review procedures for requesting materials through the inter-library loan system. On Thursday you will take Vocabulary Quiz #10, turn in Newsweek summary #6 and begin work with Vocabulary List #11. Make sure you keep up with the research work and due dates. Ask questions when you need clarification and be certain that all research project assignments are done precisely and on time. Manage your time wisely and effectively!

This week we'll begin our study of Shakespeare's tragedy, Hamlet. On Monday we will view and take notes on two documentaries, "Why Shakespeare?" and "In Search of Shakespeare." On Tuesday and through Friday, we will read and discuss Act I of this play. You will receive an Act I study guide to complete as we work with this act. Make sure you take good notes while working with this play and answer the study guide questions completely.

This week you will refine your topics for the research project. On Tuesday you will hand in your General Topic, Thursday you will hand in your specific topic and Monday of next week you will hand in your Thesis Statement. Please remember that you are writing a position paper, using research to defend your position. Also remember that deadlines are absolute. You must turn in the segments of this project on time or you will not receive credit for your work.

We have a lot of activity this week in our classroom. On Monday, you will take a quiz on Part III of O Pioneers!. After you finish, we'll review information from Parts I, II and III in preparation for a test on Parts I, II and III that will be given on Tuesday. After the test, you will begin work on the Part IV study guide. On Wednesday and into Thursday, we will practice classifying sentences according to structure. We will review independent and subordinate clauses, then will classify sentences as either simple, compound, complex or compound/complex. On Friday, you will turn in Newsweek summary #3 and will take Vocabulary Quiz #7. You'll also work on Vocabulary list #8 and its review sheet.

This week we will wrap up our studies of American Literature from the Modern/Postmodern periods. You will read and outline the biographical information on Hemingway, Thurber and Updike found in your literature anthology. We will read together and discuss "In Another Country," "The Night the Ghost Got In," and "The Brown Chest." On Thursday, you will take the last vocabulary quiz of the course, Quiz #17, and you will turn in a Newsweek summary. Next Monday, you will take a test on the Modern/ Postmodern period, then we will begin watching the film version of Of Mice and Men. Students will continue analysis of Romantic Era Literature and will begin reading Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Independently, students will read the work in its entirety and take notes. Notes should include more than summarized events and should focus on specific elements that would classify the work as "Romantic" as well as actual construction of the piece. Elements that are apparent in the poem will be discussed prior to reading, Parts I and II will be read in class, summarized, and analyzed. Students will be responsible to discuss Parts III, IV and V in class on Wednesday in the same manner of the previous day's work. Week of October 19,2009
11th Academic English
This week we will continue our work with the play The Crucible. You will finish the Act II Study Guide and will take a quiz on Act II. You will have a test on Acts I and II of The Crucible on Thursday, October 22nd. On Friday October 23rd, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #4 and will work on Vocabulary List #5 and its review sheet.

12th Academic English
On Monday we will wrap up our study of Arthurian literature and will prepare for a test. On Tuesday, October 20th, you will take a test on both Beowulf and Arthurian legend/literature. Wednesday and Thursday we will begin to watch the film Becket. You will be required to take notes on this film and, when we finish the film sometime next week, you will answer an essay test related to this film and our studies of heroes. On Friday, October 23rd, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #4 and will work on Vocabulary List #5 and its review sheet.

Monday and Tuesday are in-service days. This week we will continue our study of The Crucible. Make sure you complete the Act I Study Guide and are prepared for a quiz at the end of the week. You will receive the Act II Study Guide on Friday, 10/16.

12th Academic English
Monday and Tuesday are in-service days. This week we will continue our analysis of Arthurian Legend literature. We will finish reading "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," pp. 162-175, and will work with "Morte d'Arthur," pp. 176-184. Be sure to take accurate notes on each of the selections and to identify heroic traits in Arthur that are similar to those found in Beowulf.

Your Final Exam takes place on Tuesday, May 26th! We will finish watching the film version of the Steinbeck novel, Of Mice and Men this week. When we finish the film, we will wrap up the year with a rousing game or two of GRAMMAR BASEBALL!!!!!! You all worked very hard this year! Be sure to enjoy the summer break and come back ready to make your senior year a fantastic year!

Week of May 18th
11th Academic English
This week we will finish our study of Steinbeck's novel, Of Mice and Men. We will take a quiz on the second study guide on Tuesday, and will take the final test on the novel on Wednesday. After the test, we will review the information that will be on the Final Exam for this course, then we will begin watching the film version of Of Mice and Men. Your final Newsweek Summary is due on Thursday. The Final Exam for this course takes place on Tuesday, May 26th, the day we return after Memorial Day.

The end of your 12th Academic English career is here! Final exams for seniors will be given this week. PLEASE make sure you are well-prepared for your exam. For some of you, your grade on this exam can mean the difference between graduating and not graduating, so be smart and study for this exam. Check your calendars for the exam schedule.

11th Academic English
This week we will continue or study of Steinbeck's novel, Of Mice and Men. You should be prepared for a quiz on the study guide for chapters 1-3. On Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #17, the final vocabulary quiz of the school year! Newsweek Summary #18 is also due on Thursday. The end of the year is coming fast and furious! Make sure you stay on top of your assignments.

This week we will watch a film version of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. On Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #17, the final vocabulary quiz of the school year! Newsweek Summary #18 is also due on Thursday. Your final project on Frankenstein is due on Friday. Since many of you could use a good grade, make sure that you follow all directions for this project. Do not let things go until the last minute!! We will discuss the 12th Academic English final exam in class this week. Be sure to check your 4th quarter calendar for your exam date and prepare wisely.

Week of May 4th
11th Academic English
This week we will finish working with the short stories from the American Modern and Postmodern Period. On Tuesday, May 5th, you will take a test on all of the information from The Modern and Postmodern Period. Wednesday, we will begin studying John Steinbeck's novel Of Mice and Men. You will work on the first study guide for this novel as you read. Remember to consult your 4th quarter calendar regularly so you are prepared for all of the work we will finish by the end of the school year.

The end of your high school career is in sight!! This week we will finish our work with the British Modern/Postmodern Period literature. You will take a test on all of this information on Thursday, May 7th. On Friday you will continue your work on the Frankenstein project, preparing your material for final submission on Friday, May 15th. Make sure you stay on top of the work needed to complete this course. Some of you are behind schedule and will have a difficult time with the remainder of the year if you lag behind. Consult your 4th quarter calendar for due dates, etc.

This week we will continue studying the literature from the American Modern and Postmodern periods by reading and discussing "In Another Country" pp. 806-814 and "The Night The Ghost Got In" pp. 896-902. On Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #16 and will work on Vocabulary List #17 and its review sheet. Newsweek Summary #17 is also due on Thursday. Keep up your good work in class as we are almost finished with this school year!

This week we will continue our analysis of the literature from the British Modern and Postmodern periods by reading and discussing "The Fiddle" pp. 1076-1084, and "The Lady In The Looking Glass" pp. 1156-1163. On Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #16 and will work on Vocabulary List #17 and its review sheet. Newsweek Summary #17 is also due on Thursday. You should have finished reading Frankenstein and should be working on the Character Analysis project given to you for this novel. Don't procrastinate as your school year is quickly coming to an end!

This week we will begin studying and analyzing American Literature from the Modern and Post-modern periods. We will read and outline biography information on F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck and Ernest Hemingway, and will read "Winter Dreams," "The Turtle," and "In Another Country" from your literature anthology. Make sure you keep up with your work and follow the 4th quarter calendar since we're nearing the end of the school term.

This week we will continue studying and analyzing the Literature from the British Modern and Post-modern periods. You should have detailed notes from the introductory section on pages 950-960. We will read and analyze the short story "The Demon Lover" on pp. 1030-1038. On Friday you should finish reading the novel Frankenstein and should finish the study guide for this novel. We will begin work on the Frankenstein project next week. Be sure to keep up with the 4th quarter calendar given to you in class, as the end of the school term is quickly approaching for you seniors.

We will continue viewing the film Hamlet, noting similarities and differences between the play read in class and the film viewed in class. On Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #15 and complete Vocabulary List #16 and its review sheet. Newsweek Summary #16 is also due on Thursday. Friday we will begin work with classic Modern American Literature. Be sure to bring your literature anthology with you to class.

On Monday we will take a test on the Shakespearean drama Hamlet. Tuesday, we will begin watching the dvd version of this play. You will note similarities and differences between the play you read in class and the movie version of this work. Enjoy your well-deserved Easter break!

This week we will begin analyzing the literature of the Victorian Period by reading selected poetry of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning found in your literature anthology. We will also begin work with a selection from the Victorian novel, Jane Eyre. Make sure you are referring to the 4th quarter calendar given to you in class to prepare for each day. This week we will finish reading the play Hamlet. You will have class time to work on the Act V study guide on Monday. Tuesday we will begin reading aloud and discussing Acts IV and V. At the end of each act, you will have a short quiz. On Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #14 and will turn in Newsweek Summary #15, then work on Vocabulary list #15. Don't forget to come out to the show this weekend to see your classmates in Guys and Dolls!

On Monday, you will take a test on The Romantic Period. Tuesday, you will begin studying The Victorian Age of British Literature by outlining the intorductory notes on pp. 803-813. Wednesday and Friday you will have class time to continue your work with the novel Frankenstein. On Thursday, you will take Vocabulary Quiz #14 and will turn in Newsweek Summary #15, then work on Vocabulary list #15. Don't forget to come out to the show this weekend to see your classmates in Guys and Dolls!

11th Academic English
We will continue our study of Shakespeare's Hamlet this week by conpleting Acts III and IV. You should make sure you have completed study guides for each of these acts. Be prepared for a quiz on Act III and a quiz on Act IV.

12th Academic English
We will wrap up our study of the Romantic Period of British Literature by reading and discussing the poem, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner." On Thursday, March 26th, you will have a test on the Romantic Period. This test will include all literature studied and all of the lecture notes given to you in class. On Friday, you will read and outline the introductory notes for the Victorian Period of British Literature.
